Half Life 2 Episode 2 News (Updated 20/07/06))

Team Fortress 2 to be packaged with Half-Life 2: Episode 2 along with more goodies.

Valve Software's golden boy, Gabe Newell, made a surprise appearance at today's Electronic Arts Summer Showcase at Redwood Shores. Perhaps the one revelation that hit harder than all the rest was that the long-awaited Team Fortress 2 will be included with Half-Life 2: Episode 2 later this year. A trailer of the game was shown at the convention. From what we saw we can tell you that most, if not all of the classic character classes you know and love are back. The game also sports a new art style that's drastically different from Counter-Strike: Source or Day of Defeat: Source. Rather than going for a gritty, realistic look, the characters have a more cartoonish, flat-shaded look, comparable to the way Pixar's The Incredibles looks.

Another huge revelation made by Newell is the announcement of Portal, a stand-alone single-player game that takes place in the Half-Life universe. This new game revolves around a hero with a special "portal" gun that opens up -- what else -- portals, anywhere you want. These portals look just like the ones seen in Prey and having control over them opens up all sorts of new gameplay puzzles and challenges. We don't know who the main character in the game is and we don't know exactly how the storyline will be relate to the Half-Life storyline. What we do know is that Portal will also ship with Half-Life 2: Episode 2.

Newell also touched on some new enhancements that will be featured in Half-Life 2: Episode 2. One of these is something Valve is calling "Cinematic Physics." The idea behind this is to give players the opportunity to experience in-game physics in action on a grander scale. As an example of Cinematic Physics in action, a clip from HL2: Episode 2 was shown of a huge bridge collapsing across a vast ravine. A new graphical enhancement called "soft particle systems" will also make a debut with HL2: Episode 2.
