Commuting home this time! At night!

There's some hot SMIDSY action at 1:30. Twit nearly took me out. Only 2:32 this time, because I ride home faster than I ride to work. O_o

\o/ Yeah, about 2:10 I'm going up the "Greenway" cycle path to Morecambe. It goes past ASDA, more or less parallel with the main road, all the way to where Burger King used to be, by Morecambe station.

Slippery Lizard wrote:ooo that was close! stupid idiot pulling out on u! glad he wasnt a complete muppet and floored u!
I was mostly pissed off that he hadn't noticed me, since I have a blinking headlamp, reflective ankle straps and a high-vis jacket with reflective piping. i.e. I do a lot to ensure I'm seen, yet he still pulled out. I did have time and room to take evasive action, so it wasn't too bad. I should count myself lucky I wasn't closer when he decided to pull out, or it could have been worse. =)

Slippery Lizard wrote:where was the camera placed/hooked?? and how much was the video slowled down by???
The camera was attached to the head tube (where the fork steering crown goes through). It's a more stable position than helmet or handlebars - videos recorded in those locations are really jerky when sped up (as an example, if you view my morning commute posted earlier, you'll see it's less smooth because the cam was on my helmet).

I wish the video was slowed down, and I was that fast! ;) It's sped up by 8 times, apart from the SMIDST slo-mo part which is half speed IIRC.

Just using a lighter bike would help. ;) I'm a lot faster on my carbon fibre road bike than I am on the old steel MTB I use for commuting.

My new wheel lights. =) Not very good video, as I just spun the wheel by hand -- full-circle graphics appear at around 20mph, I believe.

Woah! Love it Rico - thats like amazing! Your own personalised 'laser show'. I can imagine when you're going fast enough the whole wheel is alight with images. Very impressed!

I wouldn't leave it on your wheel even for a moment to pop in to a shop - too many people thinking "That would look so cool on my bike!".

The lights are made by a company called MonkeyLectric. I bought them via an American online retailer, but can't recall which. The lights themselves were $50 or so (£30), but I did get hit with P&P and customs. Still, I've had a lot of joy from them.

Yep, the full-wheel display happens at about 20mph I think, due to the human eye's persistence of vision. With two sets of LEDs, you can get that down to about 12mph or a bit less. There are parts of my commute where I can attain 20mph, so the full effect is seen by some people.

I've had some good reactions to the lights, including "Mummy, look!", "Woah, cool lights", and "Wow! Those are sh*t-hot!" :D I've also heard disappointment one morning on the way to work, approaching two lads: "Look at this guy's lights... Oh, they're not on :("

As for leaving the bike anywhere, you're right, they would probably be a prime target for anyone who'd seen them while lit, or who realised what the PCB is actually for. It's only attached with 3 zip ties, so quite easy to remove, although probably a bit fiddly and suspicious-looking. I have some wire so that I can wire it on as well, if I remember to do it...

Heheh, can't beat a bit of Monkey!

As for the wheel light, I've no idea whether they're legal to use on the highway. I haven't read anything that states they're not, so I'll continue to use them on the basis that they look cool, get me noticed, and it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission. ;)

Anyway, my blue LED rear light is more illegal (since only emergency vehicles are allowed to display blue lights).

This is one from my past, a New Year's Celebration between 95/96. My dad was in the RAF at the time, and we were in Germany. As it was our last year there, we decided it would be fun if we bought a box of fireworks and record the results. And this is the results of that fateful night/morning:
