My "other" Hobbie - Astronomy (Might get picture heavy)

Postby daggsy on Wed Jan 20, 2016 8:38 pm

So Tonight is a belting clear night, even though the moon is eating at my stars and galaxy's! Who else is interested in Astronomy?? :)

Mines all wired into a corner in the kitchen and through into this laptop ^_^ Tonight is the test as I take 4 hours of imaging of Horses head nebula ( Google it if you aint sure its so pretty ! ) and play cs while imaging >.< Hopefully get some cracking shots of Jupiter Once its up :)

it is such a shame we live in such a light polluted corner of the world we would see so much more if all the lights went off for a short while

We would hagz, see so much more if the lights where all turned out >.< Thankfully around my end, they have put in these new LED lights which only admit light downwards not upwards :) but a few filters on the camera does the job aswell >.< On really clear nights I can see a nice big streak of the milky way across the sky ^_^ so my skys are not to bad up my neck of the woods :)

EWJ yes, its like the cost of a tele! mine cost 750 and ive spent another 400 on other bits ! Very pricey but well worth it ! ( Binos are great for star hopping along! ) but it is a very expensive hobbie.. I should of taken up Train spotting.. :geeky:

They changed all the street lights near where I live as well, makes quite a difference.

I love Astronomy. Now I'm in a house with a bit of room in the back garden I'm going to purchase one sometime this year. I'm going to borrow a decent one off my uncle that he has never used to see if I need one better or not.

If you don't already, you should find some way of playing Elite: Dangerous. Awesome game, and even if you don't like the combat part you can fly around the entire Galaxy on a 1:1 scale and visit the Nebulae and all the stars you see in the sky at night.
But I'm feeling good, And if you don't exist, you're still one illusion that I can't resist

I do enjoy a bit of astronomy - on the occasional clear night I will take the odd photo, although (as noted by others) it does involve staying up until after the street lights are switched off at about 1am!

They are fantastic, i assume you use a telescope with some type of attachment for the DSLR i use a 60D for my photography and tbh i only really ever took one picture and that was of the moon.

Image

the moon is always better when half lit as the shadows show the surface features so much more.

*edit* forgot to say i took this with a 70-300mm lens on my tripod and with a little photoshop to enlarge it and sharpen it.

Hagz, thats a beautiful image of the moon! You should google times for the Luna X it only appears when the moon is about half full (: and its striking when you see he sun bounce of its ridges :geeky:

Yep, I use a dslr cannon t ring attachment to use the telescope as a lens.. At 1000mm in length its not a bad lens

Wish I had the money for Photoshop, I'm currently using GIMP as its free (: just like photoshop, expect it can't accept more than 8bit, there is a beta version which accepts 16 but I always get blue screen of death >.<

Once the sky clears, and I get some more pictures il upload them here (:

your making my wallet itch. it is my birthday soon maybe i might invest in a telescope. I subscribe to creative cloud and get lightroom and Photoshop for £9.99 a month. much more affordable.

I looked at that for 9.99 a month, it is so much more affordable.. And there's loads of plugins for astronomy on photoshop (:

Mine was £707 and I had to buy a power pack which was another 50.. From telescopes and binoculars site ( Google it ) they are so helpful and it was the cheapest around for the one I wanted ( skywatcher 200explore f5 )
I struggled to understand polar aligning! Made my brain hurt  but they helped on the phone and along with a app on iPad now I can do all of that in about 5 minutes (:

Well worth the investment, I've spent about £200 on add ons but from
eBay (:

I think you should treat yourself for your birthday (:

Oh and since you've got a cannon if you get the same telescope as me.. There are loads of programs for cannon on astronomy .. Seems cannon is the way forward with astrophotography, not many Nikon programs (:
