Famous/Influential Quotations

Postby CraKinShOt on Mon Mar 17, 2008 7:31 pm

We need some more sickies in here that actually have life.... so lets try this: Quotations from influential people/books/media. If you find something good just plop it in here...

One of my favourites...

"When I was a child I spoke as a child I understood as a child I thought as a child; but when I became a man I put away childish things." - Corinthians. xiii. 11.

I've always found "If you want peace, prepare for war" by Vegetius,
to be in truth, if you want peace, but hold no army, what is there to stop others using their armies to break your peace?

I was thinking of creating a thread called "Spiritual Musings", but as you made it, here are a few I like:

"Hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing, the dawn will come. You wait and watch and work: you don’t give up."

~Anne Lamott

“We are what our thoughts have made us; so take care about what you think. Words are secondary. Thoughts live; they travel far.”

~Swami Vivekananda

"Music is the celestial sound, and it is sound that controls the whole universe, not atomic vibrations. Sound energy, sound power, is much, much greater than any other power in the world."

~Swami Satchidananda

Some classic Nietzsche ones:

"One who fights monsters must beware, lest he himself becomes a monster."

and

"What therefore is truth? A mobile army of metaphors, metonymies, anthro-pomorphisms: in short, a sum of human relations which became poetically and rhetorically intensified, metamorphosed, adorned, and after long usage seem to a nation fixed, canonic and binding; truths are illusions of which one has forgotten that they are illusions; worn-out metaphors which have become powerless to affect the senses; coins with their images effaced and now no longer of account as coins but merely as metal."

and

"The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently."

Are my favorites.

I have to lower the tone with one of my all time favourites: -

"Dancing is a perpendicular expression of a horizontal desire." ~ George Bernard Shaw

Actually Shaw has a few peaches tucked away: -

"If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange these apples then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas."

"The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it."

"Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh."

"A reasonable man adapts himself to his environment. An unreasonable man persists in attempting to adapt his environment to suit himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man."
Sarah says: I am indeed, enjoying the big willy so to speak!

Fede said: oh col, gotta tell you this, i had a dream, and you were in it as a mexican wrestler, fully tatooed and with an awesome costume :D

The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.

Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding.

Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe.

I really like that one. Really rings home.

Others:

“The worst kind of non-smokers are the ones that come up to you and cough. That's pretty fucking cruel isn't it? Do you go up to cripples and dance too?”

“I'm tired of this back-slapping "Isn't humanity neat?" bullshit. We're a virus with shoes, okay? That's all we are.”

“We all pay for life with death, so everything in between should be free.”

The only thing
that burns in Hell is the part of you
that won't let go of your life; your
memories, your attachments. They burn
'em all away. But they're not punish-
ing you, he said. They're freeing
your soul. Okay, other side.....

.....if you're frightened of dying and
hold-
ing on, you'll see devils tearing
your life away. But if you've made
your peace then the devils are really
angels freeing you from the earth.
It's just a matter of how you look at
it, that's all.

- From the movie 'Jacobs Ladder'

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain
