I was on my way back to Durham from Keswick and several unmarked police vans then a rather heavily armoured van were hurtling by at about 11 or 12.
No idea what it was at the time, I imagine this is the reason.

For such a quiet place as well, they just had a horrible bus crash with lots of kids involved a few weeks back. Two massive incidents in such a short period of time.

Such a shame :(

@arbor yeah that would of been the case, the first shots were fired around that time.

There are a variety of possible reasons being touted - argument over a will, feud with other taxi drivers or something to do with the tax man.... People want to try and explain things like this rationally, but its not always possible as you have to be in a pretty irrational state (to say the least!) to do something like this.

He shot 3 people he knew (twin brother, family lawyer and fellow taxi driver) before moving on to just shooting people at random (12 dead total and 11 injured plus himself).

You do think of the US first when you hear stories like this, but there has been shootings like this in the UK before (dunblane) plus places like Germany and there was even a shooting in a Belgium court this week too (though i suppose that wasn't a random one like this).

I think the reaction between the different countries is interesting. USA must have hundreds of gun related crimes each year, and it's not hard to think of major gun related crimes that have made the international news, unless I'm mistaken their laws regarding gun ownership hasn't change dramatically, but one major incident in the UK and there has been a lot of talk about changing our laws already.

well the dunblane massacre resulted in the banning of handguns.

there is no need for people who do not hunt for a living to own any form of firearm.

by hunt for a living i mean people who hunt game to eat, and to sell as produce.

If you want to hunt you should be allowed a gun - You should not be restricted because you dont sell your game.

As i said, to eat.

If you own a gun just to kill animals for fun, it could only take something to piss you off so much to start seeing shooting people as 'fun'.

Farmers need their guns too.
It's the only way to deal with the growing numbers of foxes killing off their lambs. But I guess the people in the cities who have no notion of this would be all for an outright fire arm ban. Using the dogs to defend their livelihood is of course "cruel".

Don't forget the floods too last year...

One guy they interviewed said his cousin Chloe Walker was killed in the bus accident, and one of the taxi drivers killed was a good friend of his. Pretty awful.
That whole community must be totally distraught with so much tragedy in such a short period of time.

There is too much talk about changing the gun laws though... we have the strictest gun laws in the world barring Japan, but you can't account for lunacy.

I understand that farmers etc do need guns and that's fine. Even a complete ban isn't going to stop 'nutters' from going on rampages and killing people anyway.

I do wonder why a taxi driver had a shotgun and a rifle though....

Re: cumbria gunman

Well personally, I enjoy rifle shooting as a discipline of sport. I would be able to get a liscence for one to keep at home if I wanted, and probably will when I can't use my school's. And actually, banning handguns didn't really change anything, other than keeping them legally out of the hands of the shooting public, which is fair enough, when they are no use for sport or game. However, they still exist on the black market (I believe), and police and military can use them. So now we end up with just the 'cops and robbers' with possesion, it has only really stopped the potency of lunatics like this gunman, but as demonstrated, shotguns and rifles work too...

So I think our law is fine at the moment, it's good that we don't liscence any 'go-to-war' firearms, and the crazed gunman shootings are really quite rare, a murderer is a murderer, it's irrelevant that he was able to use legally obtained firearms - he was out to kill. Albeit, the guns made it more deadly, I don't want to get into the value of a human life, but he could have knifed (fewer) people even more easily, and we don't ban knives, let alone liscence them.

Problem is that, if is wasn't a gun, it would be a knife/sword/axe/hammer/grenade/MORTAR!. Basically if someone is going to go nuts and start killing people then they will.

Saying that, I do agree that guns should only be given to people who have a requirement, not a desire (which is what I think you were trying to say).

You can't just want to own a gun, you have to show that you are a member of rifle shooting/game clubs etc...
