Asteroid fly past the earth

Nasa have urged amateur astronomers to watch the skies as the Earth has a near encounter with two asteroids. The objects, discovered just days ago, will pass within the moon's distance. Both can be viewed through medium-sized amateur telescopes.

The Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona, discovered both objects on Sunday morning during a routine monitoring of the skies.Astronomers in Massachusetts determined their orbits and concluded that both objects would pass within the distance of the moon about three days after their discovery.

Near-Earth asteroid 2010 RX30 is estimated to be 32 to 65 feet (10 to 20 meters) in size and will pass within 0.6 lunar distances of Earth (about 154,000 miles, or 248,000 kilometers) 10am GMT. The second object, 2010 RF12, estimated to be 20 to 46 feet (6 to 14 meters) in size, will pass within 0.2 lunar distances (about 49,088 miles or 79,000 kilometers) a few hours later at 6 pm GMT.

"Just days ago" seems a bit too short notice to be detecting things heading for earth methins :S Does anyone know how large an asteroid has to be to survive entry into the atmosphere, 20-46 feet sounds big enough to me, That's a chunk of rock size of a lorry hitting earth at 20,000+ mph going to make a nice dent

apparently these things fly past all the time, the ones which actually are 'on target' burn up in the atmosphere, thats why NASA aren't really bothered about them.

It was on gizmodo a few days ago

according to our pals in NASA... it'd be
the atmosphere protects us against most objects smaller than a football field across

or about 360 by 160 feet.(assuming they mean a US football field) :)

So pretty damn big..

How do these get through then?

And Mojave desert is littered with them ranging in size from tennis ball to basketball. I guess they start off alot bigger and burn off most of there mass in the atmosphere?

I always think if a big one hits they won't see it coming anyway.

There are some pretty big craters aren't there? Where really big ones hit, the one I'm thinking of was mentioned in that movie wolf creek.

LOL, when I first read the OP (or should that be misread  ) I thought it said a near earth sized asteroid was going to pass earth at a distance from moon to the earth, was like ' WHAAAATTT.... ' .

I read on , and saw it was luckily slightly smaller than I initially read.

Those smaller rocks (see pic) hitting the earth were originally hundrerd times bigger before entering the atmosphere. I have spoken!

Those smaller rocks (see pic) hitting the earth were originally at least a hundred times bigger before entering the atmosphere. I have spoken!

The Chixulub crater at Yucutan is over 180km across. This was caused by an asteroid that struck around the dinosaur extinction (note, not necessarily what caused it) which was about 10km across - the width originaly ascertained from iridum densities at the K/T boundary. The energy released would have been the equivelant of about 50Gt of TNT or 3 million Hiroshima bombs.

That's pretty damn big. We don't see many craters compared to say the moon though because of the atmosphere burning up asteroids for a start, but also erosion (from having an atmosphere) and tectonic subduction removing older ones.

to be honest, if an asteroid the size of the one that killed off the dinosaurs struck again it would be pretty much game over for humans no matter what we do.

so if you hear of an asteroid going to hit earth your probably better off near the impact zone. at least it'd be quick :|

According to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunguska_event small asteroids can still be deadly.

Here's a list of current biggest craters on earth http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_im ... s_on_Earth

Some of them are only 200,000 years apart and the most recent was 5 million years ago.

Biggest currently known http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vredefort_crater

It's quite hard to spot a small object travelling towards the Earth with the infinite space behind it. It's not like we have super cool sensors :/
