They create a line of silk out their arse, which catches in the wind like somebody kitesurfing, and cos their body's so small and so light they get floated up there! I seen spiders float by before on lines of web but never realised they went that high!

That's a nice animation. If you ever get the chance to go out on a high level glacier and there's not much snowfall on the ice itself you can get an idea for how much aerial plankton there is out there. You'll find big butterflies, lacewings, various flies and midges all stuck to the ice where they've been blown down and succumbed to the cold. It has to be seen to be believed.

The UK often gets colonised by insects that come over the channel. As the climate's gradually warmed we've had a lot more normally southern European/Mediterranean insects turn up on our southern shores. Some of them make it and breed and spread inland. Off the top of my head I can think of the Wasp Spider, the Western Conifer Seed Bug and the Sickle-bearing Bush Cricket which have all came from across the sea!
