United Kingdom, January 26 - UK-based Cella Energy has developed a synthetic fuel that could lead to US$1.50 per gallon gasoline.

Apart from promising a future transportation fuel with a stable price regardless of oil prices, the fuel is hydrogen based and produces no carbon emissions when burned. The technology is based on complex hydrides, and has been developed over a four year top secret program at the prestigious Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Oxford. Early indications are that the fuel can be used in existing internal combustion engined vehicles without engine modification.

According to Stephen Voller CEO at Cella Energy, the technology was developed using advanced materials science, taking high energy materials and encapsulating them using a nanostructuring technique called coaxial electrospraying.

“We have developed new micro-beads that can be used in an existing gasoline or petrol vehicle to replace oil-based fuels,” said Voller. “Early indications are that the micro-beads can be used in existing vehicles without engine modification.”

“The materials are hydrogen-based, and so when used produce no carbon emissions at the point of use, in a similar way to electric vehicles”, said Voller.

The technology has been developed over a four-year top secret programme at the prestigious Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Oxford, UK.

The development team is led by Professor Stephen Bennington in collaboration with scientists from University College London and Oxford University.

Professor Bennington, Chief Scientific Officer at Cella Energy said, “our technology is based on materials called complex hydrides that contain hydrogen. When encapsulated using our unique patented process, they are safer to handle than regular gasoline.”

It's almost too good to be true...!

yes, and i've heard many such promises that were too good to be true, and indeed they were. so excuse me if im taking this with a pinch of doubt.
Also, heard today about some new type of solar panel that funnels the energy in some way, and is a 100 times more effective than today's solar panels. its also much smaller.

but, why would these two ideas fail? because it would cost someone, somewhere, too much money when oil dependency goes lower.

Aye, I dont expect to see this fuel in the pump stations soon... or closer to ever.

More likely I foresee a very rich person/s buying the patent out on this fuel and sitting on it.
Too many powerfull people would lose too much if something as described in the OP was available, and as such it simply wouldnt become available.
The nasty part of me would love to see it come out, those black gold rich Sheiks and Texans would no longer be so secure anymore.

It wouldn't matter if it was a penny a gallon they would still tax the hell out of it because its all that keeps this country going, diesel used to be half the price of petrol until loads started to use it then up it creeps the same is happening with LPG.

kaelan people still do use vegi oil just not as simple due to drastic changes in diesel technology, older diesels had a mechanical fuel pump that didnt care to much about viscosity, but modern diesel use common rail and telescopic injectors which are very fussy about viscosity. in order to run vegi oil in new diesels you need a system to start the car on diesel and need to preheat the vegi oil to lower its viscosity then swap over from running on diesel to vegi.

syco cocker hit the nail on the head it would need to be as cheap to produce as petrol at wholesale cost or it would be more expensive than petrol by the time government added tax to it.

You can also run your car on pure alcohol with a few modifications, the key is to obtain alternative fuels from non-taxable sorces ie used vegi oil from chip shops ect ( technically your suppost to declare you are using it so they can tax you but who would ha ha )

Getting the required amount of used oil would be difficult and/or expensive unless you're nicking it from the local McDonalds.

Didnt honda make a car than ran on hydrogen, and they werent allowed to mass produce due to the oil men being mean?

the first car was built to run on alcohol ....

this will get shot down in flames

people in charge are paid enough to make sure nothin gbut petrol / oil related products go mainstream by oil producers.

You want to change this stuff you need to change government and capitalism first.

thi sis not true, it can be done easily ... oil from deep fat friers can be used.
There are garages that sell it and places that refine it.

i smell hefty price tag on the production part and a serious capacity problem on the output part ...
for hydrogen: these cars are sold and there are pumps for hydrogen that have sales.
but the cars are still quite expensive and the pumps are a bit out of the way and sparse.
when should u switch to an alternative power source?
when fuel-suppliers start giving cars away if u sign a contract u will only buy fuel with them or their partners, that would be about it ... ^^
