The god particle

Postby Security on Tue Jul 03, 2012 5:42 pm

ScienceNews claims to have seen a video on the CERN website where the discovery of the Higgs boson particle was announced.
A video that was briefly made public on the CERN website July 3 confirms that the European physics lab has discovered a new particle — most likely the long-sought Higgs boson.

"We've observed a new particle ... we have quite strong evidence that there's something there" with a mass roughly 130 times the mass of the proton, Joe Incandela, spokesman for the CMS experiment at CERN's Large Hadron Collider, says in the video, which now resides in a password-protected part of the lab's website. "This is the most massive such particle that exists, if we confirm all of this — which I think we will."

CERN officials have scheduled a major announcement on July 4 that is increasingly expected to declare the search successful.

CERN spokeswoman Corinne Pralavorio says the video was one of several made to cover different possible scenarios of a Higgs announcement and was not supposed to have been posted online. "Even we in the press office do not know what they are going to announce tomorrow," she said on July 3.
"It may in the end be one of the biggest discoveries, or observations, of any new phenomenon that we've had in our field in the last 30 or 40 years," Incandela says in the video. "When we say we've observed a particle, it means we've just got enough data to say that it's definitely there and it's very unlikely to go away," Incandela says. "We then need more data to start to ascertain its characteristics, what are its properties."

Source.

Tomorrow there will be an official announcement from CERN where it is expected that the existence of the Higgs boson will be made official.

Looks like you were correct.

I loved Cern when I was there, physics always interested me so this search over the last few years particularly has been great to follow.

This was rumour was bouncing around from thurs/fri last week, cant remember where I saw it though.

Very interesting time in science at the moment, am excited to see what else CERN can discover :)

I believe there next goal will be Supersymmetry, if they can prove that then I believe we can explain black holes (to put it really simple).
No matter what, the quotes I read today all said one this, this is only just the beginning. :)

Also for anyone that is interested, you can get this morning's press conference here.

Hard not to go off on one here lol. Been a fan of physics in general since I was just a brat, having this discovery could answer one of THE questions. Exciting times indeed. Anything new is amazing, in this case it can be doubly so. Don't even know where to start discussing this, so many new questions, so many possible answers.

I have a massive nerd-on right now
This is my sandvich. There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My sandvich is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my sandvich is useless. Without my sandvich, I am useless. I must eat my sandvich true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy, who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will. Before lunch I swear this creed: my sandvich and myself are defenders of my country, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but sandvich. Om nom.

Don't know much about Physics, does this mean we can make a universe?

Nope.

It means that the predicted and partially observed model of physics used to explain the universe is correct. To cut a very long story short, the Higgs Boson explains why some things have mass and why others don't. Scientists theorised why this was before but it was annoying because it hadn't been observed. Now it has!

Thanks, so what can they do now they have found Higgs Boson?

It's also not the god particle, stop calling it that.

Some lad wrote a book calling it that, and for some reason the bloody thing has stuck.

I don't care for the name god particle either but it's what has stuck with the public, accept it because it won't change.

The public where I live can spell neither 'particle' nor 'god' so it could be called the wibbly wobbly massy wassy inducing explanatory thingamajig and it would stick.

Good news for the science indeed (slowpoke reporting in)

Also, I hate the word "god-particle" because now every religious person thinks science found god :|

Every religious person does not now think that science has found god; the religious folk who'll think that have been at odds with science for so long that they won't now have an alliance.
