In the Shadow of the Sun

A little warning, some may find this upsetting.

The trailer starts to give you an idea, but I'll give a little bit of exposition.
People with albinism in many African states face prejudice through no fault of their own because of looking different and myths spread about them by traditional witchdoctors, claiming they can make a potion to better their lives if they bring back bones/limbs of an albino person. This may sound like bollocks to you, which it is, however some people are desperate enough to believe this and there have been reports of attacks, especially in Tanzania, resulting in more than 200 cases in the past 10 years.
I first heard about this a few years ago, although not much has changed, there has been some progress in persecution of the assailants and more attention brought to the issue from the UN human rights council.

I just wanted people to know this happens and to give something to discuss. If you have any questions about Albinism I'm sure I can answer them :)

I couldn't believe this was happening 10 years ago, so little changes over the years. The list of potential things their body parts will cure is ridiculous. It's genuinely scary what lack of education can do.
This is my sandvich. There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My sandvich is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my sandvich is useless. Without my sandvich, I am useless. I must eat my sandvich true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy, who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will. Before lunch I swear this creed: my sandvich and myself are defenders of my country, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but sandvich. Om nom.

I don’t know if it’s related but when my dad was a kid in South Africa there were the occasional muti killings of white children. The apparent thinking being that whites had some sort of powerful muti in them to be able to control the country/continent. I can imagine that the targeting of albinos pre-dates the arrival of Europeans in Africa but it can't have helped matters when the "white devil" arrived.

Muti will remain a powerful cultural factor in much of sub-Saharan Africa as long as people are uneducated, poor, desperate and mistrusting of foreign medicine. Short of whisking African albinos away to Scotland there's not much that can be done without addressing all those other pressing issues in most African countries.

Judging people by your own standards is wrong, what is needed is good education to alleviate this type of thing.

Don't forget wild life is killed globally by people making profits out of others, and some who are even fairly well educated buy into this type of scam. A lot in far eastern countries.

I agree with Bobbobthebob, you have to address multiple issues in that society, and short of locking up the perpetrators, there is no clear cut answer other than education.

It's a well known fact that witch doctors indeed "cure" people from diseases with parts of Albino blacks. It's sickening, but it has always happened. Just like in some countries they see homosexuality as "deviant" and "sickness". It's really stupid but unfortunately, such ridiculous persecution still happens. Even in the United States.

I think that seeing a sexual orientation as deviant and killing another human being to make medicine out of their bones are on slightly different levels.

Yes but they hardly just call people names. Again it leads to violence and murder.

Belief in superstition over science kills people in this country as well but that does open a can of worms over the way some religions are with surgery or blood transfusions as well as treating things like epilepsy as something supernatural. Education really is the only thing you can hope for but in some countries you need some basic stability before you can start with that. We do tend to take the things previous generations created for us for granted some times. No matter how we grumble about minor things we get the basics right with freely available education and healthcare. Most modern countries have socialised medicine now right? Imagine calling yourself a modern country and not having it.
