Trim down your CSS and gain HDD space

Postby Little_Devil on Thu Aug 03, 2006 2:13 pm

In the Counter-strike-source\cstrike folder there is another folder called downloads.

I found that this folder creates dat files every time I join a server, and after haveing this on there for a year, the folder had collected nearly 3 GB of dat files. :(

Delete this folder, when the game starts again the folder is created again and new dat files are placed there. :D

I suggest you do this on a regular basis.

Nice tip, LD. :D

The SteamLogs folder is another you can safely clean out every so often as well. It doesn't get as big as the folder you mentioned, but it contains useless log files that you'll only ever need if Steam goes belly up.

heh, I delete it everyday, there is another folder too

cstrike/materials/temp

also filled with a load of crap files that can be deleted safely, if you got 3GB in your DL folder... I suspect about 500MB-1GB at least in that one then

This is all good stuff. Perhaps you should make another post or move this to the Counter-Strike: Source area instead?

Temp folders and log files are allways deleted on my machine, useless crap. :D
But it is also a very good tip, just didn't think of it, seeing as I have a batch file that deletes those on startup.

This of course goes for all the Steam Games you may have DoD, HL2 etc.

I made a batch file some time ago that cleans and zips up certain files, like screenshots and clears the directory, takes a bit longer on boot up, but there is no reason why this cannot be run from a desktop shortcut, or even from a schedule. :D

yeah, this is a good tip!

you can also set your cleaning programs (like ccleaner) to automatically delete these files when you run them, to save some time and effort.

In my SteamApps folder there's .gcf files named "day of defeat source.gcf" etc
the files are about 1 GB each! some more some less
are they mandatory or can I delete them?
