turn it off in your mouse driver options

Win7 mouse options - untick enhance pointer precision

for Steam games put this into your launch options
Code: Select all
-noforcemaccel -noforcemparms -noforcemspd

You may want to adjust USB poll rate to at least 500Hz if your mouse drivers permit it, otherwise you need to mod your OS, which I don't recommend if you've not done something like that before, but its quite straight forward with Win7 (more so than WinXP/Vista was anyway)

Anyone experienced a slower internet connection after upgrading? When I was on XP, I always had a ping of 10 or less. Now it always hovers around the 25-35 mark..

Check your network with http://www.pingtest.net/ and run the windows connection test/fix thingy, are you using wireless? And make sure you have no other software connected to net.

I'm with Virgin Media - 10mb cable connection. Non-wireless. I've also tried updating my network cards drivers for Windows 7 and a 'tweak' patch which seemed to do sod all..

I'll try the test when I get home.

You use ethernet right? Is your ethernet device from Realtek and did you install the Windows 7 realtek update?

Check your network activity with the resource monitor - and run a spyware / virus sweep

There is a fault with the Realtek update from Win7, you'll need to download the latest from realtek or ones from your mobo CD should be fine.

In general do not download device updates from Windows update unless you have a problem with your device and that particular update will fix your problem.

When you install the software on a new O.S. you can get a lower or higher ping. The route for your connection is recalculated at that time and is information that is held on your computer in the blob file, deleting this and letting Steam try again, may get you a better route.

btw you have lower ping and a lot less jitter than I do to the same server (Milton Keynes) over a greater distance. Ping test, as in speedtest.net, that people show, are not much use for an accurate ping of what they would achieve to the servers. They merely show a snapshot to the test server at that moment in time over many routes.

The Tweak Guides Tweaking Companion for Windows 7 is quite a good read:

Thanks man. Might just do that... But then again, after installing Windows 7 I had to re-download STEAM which would mean a clean blob file..?

That is exactly the point I am making, it is a new blob file with a new route so your ping may be higher.
