Major Shit, Help Needed!!!

Postby Cass0 on Tue Mar 22, 2005 10:32 pm

Right guys my PC is f00ked and i need some help on how to fix it, atm im on my dads pc.

Right 1:50 am monday night and my pc suddenly turned off, i could smell a funny smell and when i tried turning on my pc and the fans begun and it sounded all ok, but the green light on the front of my pc case wasnt coming on, then on my monitor it displayed "DPM going to off mode" or something on the lines of that. i have no clue what to do! i have opened up my computer case dusted evrwhere and cannot see any burn marks or any problems.

My dad suggested calling someone to look at it?

Have you guys got any tips or imformation what i could do to solve my problem?

Feed back would be helpful thank you

Yes they would, the fans typically run off the 12V power out, however your motherboard and peripherals run on 5V.
The main fan in the power supply, can either be mains driven or 12V.

Does the computer make any sound over the pc speaker. This is known as the POST(power on self check). It should just give a single short bleep.
If it gives out another noise, ie short, then long, then repeated short beeps, or any combination wright these down and post them here.

If you recieve no sound at all it would more than likely that
a) you have not got a pc speaker.
b) your 5 V supply is down.

All is not lost however.
Take these simple steps.

1/ Have a good look around for any shorts.
2/ Smell at hdd, cd, floppy, psu. If you smell any burnt components on that device problem solved.
3/ Unplug HDD,CD and floppy. Unplug any device on USB ports.
4/ Start computer.
5/ If computer starts, turn off, connect floppy try again. Next HDD, then CD.
6/ If computer fails to start, put in another video card.

Most of the time a failure of any device on the 5V line can cause the computer to stop working.

Let me know the results of these tests

funny smell is often down to a PSU failure - especially if its covered with dust and overheats. check that first.

And if its not that it may be the motherboard.

If it smelled like plasticy dust - you popped the PSU

If it smelled kinda like roasted peanuts - you've killed something more expensive ie CPU, Gfx, Mobo or RAM - Take the whole thing to bits and properly scan the whole lot for burn marks or popped caps or anything visual that would give us a better idea.. I gotta a funny feeling somethings overheated and given up, i know how bad you gamers are at lookin after a PC...

Oh yeah DPM means Dynamic Power Management = Makes the monitor work with the minimum possible components connected = Somethings fucked.

Lets not get carried away people.
A lot of these devices have jtag, upon anything going wrong ie outside the devices parameter list, the PSU is told to shut down.

Just folow the steps I provided and I am sure we will find the problem.

since you've already opened up your case and can't see anything burnt...

you have to check each and every socket and connector for every device including the CPU, if you can shine a torch into the PSU and see if anything is burnt.

Seeing as your using your dads pc .borrow his PSU for 5 mins while you check to see if it is your PSU. And same with all the other components if there compatable untill you find which component is the problem.
