Processor Question

Postby La Chavvy on Sat Apr 09, 2005 10:03 pm

Now this may be daft, but all I have ever heard is

AMD AMD AMD AMD AMD AMD

INTEL INTEL INTEL INTEL INTEL INTEL

Is there any other real CPU makers? Obviously it wont be as good, but are there any other Processor Companies?

no.

Well there are, but nothing really 'competition wise' in the PC market.

IBM make Power PC processors for Apple.
Transmeta are trying too bless them but they are crap.

Of course if you want a large enterprise server you have much more choice. :D

You're young chavvy m'lad :P

I remember the first PC we had with a 5 1/4" floppy drive, ran on DOS, had about a 20hz processor and 320k memory ;)

Classic Bill Gates quote: "640K ought to be enough for anybody." (memory) *sniggers*

Err IBM buy Intel, and re-badge them.

Lets not forget Sun Micro Systems with their workstations either. Very powerfull machines. Was based on the Motorola 68000 chipset.

Lest we not forget, there are a lot of processor manufacturers out there that choose to aim at a different market sector, other than the PC. Games machines use neither Intel nor AMD in the main.

Other CPU manufacturers include Siemens, Hitachi, Toshiba, but to name only a few. These companies have not entered the PC market for certain reasons.

It was rumoured at one time, that Intel had a chat with some of these companies, and made some kind of an agreement.

20hz processor
Could that be Mhz

My first PC was a 286 SBC running at 12 Mhz. Same memory as Easy Tiger.

I do like the Bill Gates quote, perfectly true.

bill gates' "quote" was taken out of context

http://www.thocp.net/timeline/timeflash ... 1.htm#640k

plus many such sites, I do not believe billy was refering to the future of computing as such, but refering to the current state of computing back then.

as for CPUs

VIA make some for the PC platform, very very very low powered and such you can have them passive cooled, but speeds are very slow, only worth it if running a webserver/fileserver or something similar
