refers to the number of chips on the module.

32meg x 8 means 8 chips, each chip worth 32meg

I believe the max is 16 chips, 8 on each side. This brings me to mention that modules can be single or double sided, single means chips are only present on one side of the module, and double sided the chips are on both sides.

In the past single/double sided mattered since some motherboards couldn't use them. These days it is less of a problem as practically all mobos can use single or double sided, the only problems arise with populating all the slots or something similar
