pc problem

Postby weetabix on Wed May 04, 2005 10:58 pm

sorry my post title isnt very descriptive but i don't have any idea whats wrong, if any mods have a better title im sure they'll change it.

A lot of text is not being displayed on the monitor, it sometimes gets there in the end but things are disappearing all over the place, icons on the desktop, text in any program, programs on the start bar, and other stuff. when it gets like this its like the processor is being fully used or something, everything is very slow to load to the point that i couldn't load internet explorer to do an online virus scan. restarting my pc fixes the problem, but it comes back again randomly. i've scanned for viruses using norton and f-secure's online scanner, i've scanned for spyware using yahoo antispy and aluria spyware eliminator. all came up clean. i reinstalled windows media player and the drivers for my tv card, i tried to get the drivers for my graphics card but it said the file was corrupted or i had a virus, i might try and get that again.

i've also had error messages opening css and errors on both iTunes and wmp, all occurring near the bad patches. I think it may have started a couple of weeks ago when i started getting fps drops (70 to 10) in css at random points that made it unplayable but these seem to have mainly gone now.

My PC is:

Processor : IntelĀ® PentiumĀ® 4 530 HT Processor
Memory : 1024MB DDR RAM (2x 512MB)
Hard Disk : 400GB (2x 200GB) 7200 RPM Serial ATA Drive
External HD: 250GB 7200 RPM (USB2/Firewire)
Optical 1 : 16x Dual Layer DVD-Rw Drive
Optical 2 : 16x DVD-ROM Drive
Graphics : 256MB ATi X600 PCI Express Graphics Card
Monitor: dell 17" CRT

running windows xp sp2

Try re-seating the memory (turn off your PC 1st!!) and running memtest, see how it fares up.

Sounds like your memory has gone a bit... erm... wrong.

Aye, try the memory and also re-seat the gfx card just to make sure..but if its still the same, to rule out the software side a reinstall is a must.

You'll just have to weigh up how badly do you want your pc working or how badly do you want to save all your files.
But I'm feeling good, And if you don't exist, you're still one illusion that I can't resist
