PC wireless emitter?

Postby coldandtired on Fri Mar 02, 2012 9:48 am

First off, I don't even know if this exists or is even possible :)

My partner is going to visit her parents soon and wants to take her tablet with her.

She's got so used to using it but of course without an Internet connection it's almost useless.

The idea of walking her and her parents through installing a wireless router makes my head hurt.

So, I was wondering, is there is a way to plug in some sort of USB dongle which will allow the tablet to connect wirelessly to the PC, and use the PC's broadband connection?

Its possible to setup an ad hoc wireless network using the dongle and bridge the connections on the pc, however i seem to remember last time i tried it (quite some years ago) it wasnt all that smooth.

A guide here on the basic steps if the parents pc is xp - im sure there is a windows 7 guide out there somewhere:

http://www.raymond.cc/blog/how-to-share-internet-connection-in-xp-without-wireless-router/

EDIT:

There is a link to a program that supposedly does it on windows 7 here for devices like mobiles that don't like adhoc networks, though after having visited the site of the program it does look 'less than professional' so it might be worth finding some instructions on how to do it manually :)

That's exactly what I need!

Now I just need to find out what type of equipment does it (when I search for wireless network adapters I only find the kins that receive signals from a router).

Get them to install logmein /remote access software as well so you can fix it when it inevitably breaks and its your fault somehow

I vaguelly remember seeing paired usb wps sync dongles, can't remember the name of them for the life of me though. Should just be a case of share the internet connection on the computer, plug in each dongle and press the buttons at the same time. Have a similar thing that came free with my Virgin superhub, shall have a nose and see what they're actually called :)
This is my sandvich. There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My sandvich is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my sandvich is useless. Without my sandvich, I am useless. I must eat my sandvich true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy, who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will. Before lunch I swear this creed: my sandvich and myself are defenders of my country, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but sandvich. Om nom.

Find out which router they have first.

Netgear usually has a guest network that is easy to set up.

They don't have a router, otherwise I'd just connect to it (or switch it for a wifi version).

I reckon just buy them a cheap wireless router.

Cheaper than buying matched USB transceivers, which is why I was asking about the modem.

The buying isn't the problem, it's the walking though setting it up remotely that terrifies me :)

Don't really want to go that route either as it would stick out of the tablet uncomfortably. I was hoping there'd be an easy way to utilize the tablet's wifi and the PC's broadband.

You would still have to fiddle around setting up the PC as a router/gateway, and for the cheapness and ease of set-up then a router is the way to go.
