Anyone heard anything about this?
Valve are rumoured to be making a gaming console:

It seems to be like an attempt to make PC gaming more accessible. :)

From what I heard they got annoyed at how slowly the gaming console's graphics were getting upgraded and it was holding back pc gaming, so they are planning a console

They should make a console which let's you exchange new parts (like a GFX, Memory and CPU upgrade) every 2 years or so so it stays up to date! You can still play older games and play the new ones by doing so.

I wonder if this might not actually hurt PC gaming as if this gets popular the market will start following the pace they refresh this Steam box instead of the "normal" development.
On the other hand it might indeed encourage more frequent console updates... I guess time will tell but I don't see me getting it any time soon.

Actually Dells Alienware X51 is supposed to be an early version of a Steam box. ;)

I doubt Valve will make a console (Gabecube?), Microsoft and Sony would outsell Valve without breaking a sweat. They already sell both consoles at a loss, and their fanbase far exceeds Valves.

Personally, from looking at their patents, I would think its more likely we'll see some hardware for PC's to make gaming easier for everyone. They've patented gamepads, biometric controllers etc, not consoles or baseunits, which you would expect to see if they were working towards a console.

Though tbh I wouldnt be surprised if this isnt more valve-trolling and they'll just show a 30 second preview trailer of HL3/HL2:EP3, DODs2 or just have Gabe swimming in a pool of 100$ bills...

lol that would certainly cramp their style.

Release Valve software that slows down on their own box, and on each release gets slower. Time to buy a new box, sorry no upgrades for this.

I don't see how this will work though. Will it be a console, but with the performance of a PC? Or will it be a special "Valve-made" PC optimized for gaming?
This won't end well. Just another nail in the coffin for PC gaming. More casual console nubbies incoming.
Have you forgot what you made Half-Life for? Counter-Strike? Why bother with this? Just let the mindless console sheep hang after. Dead weight. Better off gone until they're worth paying attention to.

afaik, this is all based on something gabe said, that if they would have to come to it (with the hardware market going nowhere), they would develop hardware, but he also said its not one of their priorities now especially considering how disadvantaged they are at that area and that they should rely on other companies for hardware.
so far, just a rumour.

Valve has come out and said that they're not developing a "Steam Box".

I wonder in what kind of entry that will lead in the Valve time list.
