Rasberry Pi

Postby CATCHERAL on Sun Apr 15, 2012 10:11 pm

Was wondering what you guys think about it?

I was wondering if it would be possible to run a torrent client with it, and just have some external memory so I don't fuck up my main box by torrenting stuff, do you think it would be possible?

Catch :)

Depends how lightweight the client is and if it can handle the I/O, there is console based client for Linux. Probably worth a shot, even if only for some giggles.

To be fair it's not exactly like any torrent client is particularly intensive. 700MHz and 256MB of RAM is plenty for torrenting, and storage can be handled by an external hard disk (they do come with an SD card slot, but I'm going to assume you need more space). Just make sure you get the one with the ethernet port on it.

@Deathtaker - The default OS on the Pi is going to be Fedora, with support planned for Debian and another distro I can't remember the name of. It's ARM based and using standard I/O controllers so I wouldn't be surprised if there is drivers already available.

Personally I think I'm going to get a few of these. Lightweight file server? Yes please. Cheap DLNA-compatible streamers? Win. Plus, just tinkering with them should be fun. I wonder how far you could overclock one...

Yeah, I saw the bit article just after I posted this. I love how the picture on the first page says 'This should not be overclocked' and then, 7 pages later, they overclock it. <3 bit.

Torrenting with it should be no problem at all. Personally I run a torrent client straight off my wireless router. It's just an average router with a MIPS CPU and 64 MiB of RAM, and I can run torrents just fine, along with FTP, SMB and some other services. I use a USB drive for storage, but there are any number of ways you could do it.
I think there is a lot of potential in that thing. Lots of little hardware devices like it popping up these days, all very promising for those who like to experiment a little. :)

Been tempted to buy one stop i can turn it into a emulator box and use it to watch streams because i don't have anything in the house to do something like that without repeatly falling on its face...
Don't know how good it would be for that sort of thing though :(

It has an Ethernet port, a HDMI port and proven capabilities for 1080p playback. Would make a somewhat decent HTPC. And if you're just streaming content, no need to worry about storage.

I'll be picking up a few of these and setting up piped music around the house. Should be relatively simple and lots of fun :D
This is my sandvich. There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My sandvich is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my sandvich is useless. Without my sandvich, I am useless. I must eat my sandvich true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy, who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will. Before lunch I swear this creed: my sandvich and myself are defenders of my country, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but sandvich. Om nom.

Might have a stab at trying to get one :D!
Be nice to get an Emulator on it and play some games from the previous generations :D!
Saves me the hassle of trying to find my console, wires, games and a tv that will allow them. Also saves the hassle of actually having to leave it set up when I want to play it :D!

From the sounds of Day 1, it was a complete mess trying to get hold of one and I'm not sure if I can be bothered to go through the hassle of trying to find one and then wait around a couple months for it to come...

All kinks and bumps should have been encountered you would expect (bad Ethernet ports and the certification issue) but it will most likely take months before you get one when you order it as the production is very limited and demand is through the roof.

But it does give people plenty of time to brush up on their python skills lol
