Windows 7 Uninstall/Reinstall

Postby Gh0st.IRE on Wed Jul 25, 2012 9:33 am

So I'm selling my old PC to a friend and want to clean install the OS onto i, mainly to protect any of my files that used to be on it (Documents, Names, Addresses etc)

It has Win 7 Ultimate, legit. Can I un-register the key used, install the OS again using my discs I bought for my new PC, and re-use the same key by re-registering it?

You shouldn't need to un-register it, you should be able to re-use the same key.
At worse call Microsoft up and say it is a re-install on the same machine.

If you are concered about data I would use: http://www.dban.org/ to securly erase all the data as a re-install will NOT delete all your data, it will leave it there but mark it on the hard drive as deleted (It could still be recovered)

yeah, I would just low level format the drive, not install anything on it and just sell it.

Officially if you have a OEM copy then you are not allowed to install it on another machine no matter what but Deathtaker's solution generally works. :)
If it isn't an OEM copy then removing it from 1 machine should be enough to be allowed to install it on another.

I read it as re-installing it onto the same machine so nothing illegal there.

So I just use this DBAN thing and that's it? Will it wipe the OS or will I need to do anything?

it will destroy all data on the hard drive, then you install the OS after and it will be a complete fresh install

*Note I am not responsible for any datalose from any of my posts above (Just covering my back)
