PC packed up

Postby LurkyUK on Mon Aug 20, 2012 2:54 pm

So on its 10th birthday my crappy PC has finally broken and I'm quickly looking into parts to build a new one. Something that doesn't seem to be explained anywhere is if any motherboard can go onto any PC case. When I look at the back of my pc it looks like the board was custom made to fit the case due to it being the exact right size to have all the slots and ports on the back line up. Do they all just follow the same dimensions or how does this work?

All cases and motherboards have a size factor (Atx, E-Atx, Btx, Mini-Itx, etc..) so all you need to do is make sure that the case you have is the same form factor (or bigger) than your motherboards form factor

If you google your current motherboard it should tell you what form factor it is (most 'normal' large size motherboards are generally ATX) and then you know that size fits your case :)

The ATX standard also specifies where the screw holes need to be etc inside the case and on the motherboard so they will all be exactly the same.

The bit on the back where your usb ports etc slot through the case is a thin metal plate (called a port cover i think) that should pop out of the case and you will get a new one with the new motherboard to pop in - looks something like this:

You might run into problems if the case is from certain manufacturers as they sometimes don't stick to form factor. Is it a brand name model like Dell, Acer etc?

I'm chucking my old pc completely, I was asking about the sizes etc as I'm looking into building another from scratch. Thank you guys this has really helped I hadn't noticed that form factor before and the case and motherboard I want seem to go together.

Will you really need 3tb? You would be better with an ssd for os and then a hard drive for storage

How are you going to backup any important data?

Graphics the nVidia 660 seems the best bang for buck at the moment but always read the reviews

Which powersupply are you getting, please don't buy a cheap one as there is a reason they are cheap, and can potentially damage your components

HI Lurky,

my advice....

If you had to originally ask about motherboard sizes fitting in to a case....

Please, for the love of all on earth, do not order in the parts and plan to build it yourself.

Spend a little extra and buy one pre-built and save all the frustration of not knowing what goes where and why.

I am only saying this as you seem a little uncertain about PC components. If you hadn't started off with your opening question I would have said give it a go and build one yourself.

Cheers
