Best way to backup

Postby Binerexis on Tue Oct 30, 2012 3:11 pm

Hey guys.

Been having some trouble with my PC and have been told that I should reinstall Windows. Obviously, this will wipe everything so I need to know the best/a damn good way to back up everything or at least everything that's important (extra brownie points if you guys can tell me a way that will keep all my saved game data) so that I don't have to rebuild absolutely everything from the ground up.

Most of your save game stuff gets backed up by simply backing up the steamapps folder somewhere.

If I just save that entire folder, will that basically make my Steam the same as now? Saved games, user profiles etc? I get that I may have to reinstall some games but if the saved data is all there, I'm happy.

If you save the folder you won't have to reinstall any games - just Steam itself (and then put the folder back). Each game will need to download a few kb to register itself again and that's it.

Most games store their data there but a few are in your document folder and a few others in %appdata%.

Check those out and start those games to try and force cloud sync, in which case you can forget about them.

I'll just save a backup of my Steam and everything in my appdata folder to port over just to make sure I don't miss anything. Cheers!

And my documents (or whatever it's called now).

I did a clean install today and I remember Deus Ex, Penny arcade, Legend of Grimrock, Dungeons of Dredmor, Plants vs Zombies, and a couple more stored data this way.

Anyway.. As C&T has said basically your docs folder + steam and you should be sorted.. then just reinstall windows.. download steam.exe and transfer evrything back again.

Not bothered doing it; I'm pursuing getting a refund from the company I bought the PC from as I've been advised that doing a reinstall may just mask the problem for a while. I've also had a slew of problems with the machine and it isn't fit for purpose.
