Internal Portable HDD Bay

Postby LeDono on Mon Mar 25, 2013 10:34 pm

hi, I've been looking at the FreeAgent Goflex drives, which have SATA connections, and usbII/III/Firewire converters, but is it possible to mount this internally inside a computer?????
I'm looking for a hot swap-able HDD bay, where the eject-able drive is in a portable USB configurable/ ready case.
I can't seem to find anything for the goflex, but it looks easy enough for me to print off my own bay. just would rather buy one that would have less to go wrong... and possibly lockable for transport.
i've currently got a 5.5" IDE bay which (as a uni student) i take home with me for films, music, programs and work, while leaving the bulk of my desktop at uni.
Luckily i've got two bays, so one is installed in my parents, but i'd rather have a USB compatible drive that i can take on campus....

anyone got any ideas/links ??
Cheers for your help,
LeDono

Goflex is just an external USB box for your HDD, and imho is not worth the money.

You really need to define what you are using the drive for, data or programs ?
I used to carry my HDD back and forth between home and work, being in a HDD drive bay carrier. However this changed when I went to contract at a company and I used an external drive in a case, which connected via USB. Both of these were 5.25 drives, which are quite bulky and heavy for carting around, so I changed that for a 3.5" drive in a USB connected box. The biggest problem with the external USB connected drives was speed at that time, however these days we are onto USB 3 with a high connection speed, so transfer rates should not be a problem.

The only reason I can see for a drive bay these days is for the O.S. but you would have to have 2 O.S's on the HDD anyhow, since they are machine specific, or for moving programs that are installed on 2 different machines.

Anyhow you can pick up removable drive bays from as little as £10, but given the size of USB sticks now, you can use these for data and even small programs, or you can pick up external USB 3 drive cases for as little as £25 http://www.ebuyer.com/211212-dynamode-e ... hd3-5s-3-0

These days I just use a NAS drive and connect to it from wherever I am.

Many different enclosures, all from the USA so you have VAT on top (20%), P&P and import tax

yeah i don't just want an enclosure.. i want it to be able to dock inside a desktop... the Goflex is flexible enough to allow sata connection when stationary and usb3 when on the go.... (hmmmm i wonder where it got its name from....)
I should be able to get one in the next couple of weeks, then design a internal front accessible housing for it... eventually 3D printing it off... i'll try and keep this thread updated as the project goes on....

yes. that is a dock for internal "naked" drives. what i'm looking for is something like this :
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817198033
it has a dock/bay that fits in your computer, and a portable case the portable case has usb2 and sata 2 connections, and just slides into the dock. no naked drives.
ideally i'd like a sata3 usb3/2 one, but thats the only type i've found :/

The vantec product is a plug tray in to computer via SATA, and when undocked can be used as a USB 3 external drive.

They already have one out, which they have only just discontinued, prior to the release of the one above.
Last one EZ Swap EX (MRK-250FD-ST) is a USB 2, new one (MRK-253ST-BK) is USB 3

More variations
