Friend of mine is having issues with his Alienware [FIXED!]

Postby I Blame my Mother on Sat Apr 13, 2013 10:53 pm

Hey guys, I have a friend with a poorly laptop and I'm fresh stumped as to why.
I'd really appreciate it if anyone could shed some light on the situation.

Alienware M15X laptop, roughly 2 years old. When running certain games the laptop has a tendency to power off as if experiencing an overheat, with no shutdown process or other warnings. Processor heat is monitored in these instances and it never reaches much higher than 75C. Main culprits causing this are Guild Wars 2 and FTL, although it does ocassionaly happen with other games.

If anyone has a clue, please let me know. If you need to know more, I can ask him.
Thanks in Advance,
Blame.

If I did I wouldn't know it. No errors pop up. It just turns off

Isn't there third party log programs that would give specific error codes etc.. when something turns off.. sorry i'm tired now and this just popped into my mind.. Also doesn't windows (well 7 anyway) have an error log built in somewhere?

I've never made use of it, no idea where you'd find it.

Ok few things, type event viewer in search, then, Event Viewer > Custom Views > Administrative Events (double click). This should show system errors. If you get kernel errors open cmd. Run sfc /scannow(this will check and attempt to repair system files)

Try turning down the settings in the games that seem to cause the problems, if the shutdowns then become less frequesnt, its an overheating GPU.

There is an inbuilt crashdump log that windows should create but if its just switching off i doubt it will be created, i can send instructions on how to read the crashdumps if the above suggestion doesnt seem to make any difference as its a bit in depth

You could also try and stress the components individually. Like Furmark for GPU, Linpack for CPU (with and without much RAM allocation). If it crashes during Linpack and the CPU temps are normal my guess would be on the RAM. To verify that you can use Memtest86+.

Just had him run Furmark, without even testing his GPU is at 92C.

You don't have to run any tests, it's simply overheating because fans are clogged and there's not enough thermal paste anymore.

He wasn't cleaning it properly at all for the first year of its lifespan, and only about once after then before it started acting up. He's bought some thermal paste now and is going to replace it. Hopefully this fixes the problem once the new paste sets in.

Make sure he gets that smothering it in thermal paste doesn't mean better cooling. :P
He only needs a pea sized blob, if that.

That said, paste should still be fine after a year, I would just give the insides a good clean.
