That time of Year(keyboard time)

Postby Ger-h on Wed Aug 28, 2013 2:32 pm

Good Afternoon,

It's time after 2 and half years using a very shit keyboard I think it's time to upgrade to a gaming keyboard.I have around 50 to 70 Euro to spend. So I don't know what to look for in a gaming keyboard at all( part from it has key's of course) was thinking of getting a mechanic keyboard but don't know the disadvantages or the advantages of one?

Tanx in advance :D

Should have got one at i49!

Which is exactly what I told myself when I got home and realised I wanted a new one lol

It's a little above your price range, but I'm leaning towards this for mechanical: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/corsair- ... g-keyboard

And this one for non-mechanical, straight upgrade from my current G105: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/logitech ... -plus-more
This is my sandvich. There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My sandvich is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my sandvich is useless. Without my sandvich, I am useless. I must eat my sandvich true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy, who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will. Before lunch I swear this creed: my sandvich and myself are defenders of my country, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but sandvich. Om nom.

I don't understand the whole mechanical thing. I am never going to be an esport superstar and tbh, I do OK with my logitech G510 ('normal' switches). If you play the mechanical lasts longer card then I tend to put a life expectancy on my kit of around 2-3 years. Given how much I game and punish my kit if a keyboard lasts me 3+ years I am doing good and am a happy man. I have had my 510 for 2 ish years and aside from cosmetic stuff there is nothing wrong with it.

G510 might be a bit out of your price range, but I really like it and would try and replace with a similar model when it does give up the ghost.

TL;DR: I don't get the hype about mechanical. If you like the feel of it over another keyboard then great, but I would prefer to spend similar money and get more features. I particularly like the screen on my 510 so I can tell the time (I don't wear a watch) or who is talking on mumble regardless of whether the overlay is working.

My 1st ever keyboard was a mechanical and the only thing that actually stopped it working was some pillock dropping a 19" CRT monitor on it. It still works but obviously some of the keys are knacked.

Really if you take the time to clean them a mechanical lasts for life or until a clumsy so-and-so drops an Iiyama on them.

Here is a good video about mechanical keyboards: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHnMcFGkGcA
Keep in mind that this video is a little dated by now and that some of the keyboards are not produced anymore (corsairs for example).

Many people prefer mechanical keyboards, but I've also seen some that like membrane keyboards better so it really depends on your personal preference.
(In germany) 70€ is pretty much the cheapest mechanical keyboard you can find (meka G1 or CM storm quickfire).

I have used a Logitech G15 & Razor Arctosa, both of which are really nice. the G15 is handy for gaming as it has an LCD display which shows in-game stats.

http://www.ttesports.com/productPage.as ... h8yLhukrN0 is what I use and never had any problems, my second one also (for two rigs) - comfortable, responds perfectly and I got them both cheap too off eBay!

The sidewinder x4 (~40EUR) is pretty nice. Not mechanical, but the keys have a nice solid press.
Macro keys are nice, backlight works well, well built - it feels much more expensive than it actually is.

I have the Cyborg keyboard.

Good for gaming, but not too great for fast typing as the keys are spaced a little too far apart. Lots of light & macro configurations & audio and usb ports too.

Pretty good keyboard imho

Good call on the Challenger. Thermaltake's entire TTeS line is ridiculously good. Got one of their Mekas and the thing is damn nigh indestructible.
