Upgrades Required £900-1000 Budget!

Postby Synaphix on Sat Nov 02, 2013 12:32 am

Housemate has quite an old computer but most bits are fine so he needs a select few bits good enough to run the game fairly decently. He bought my monitor off me so that is not an issue, psu is fine etc. The budget is £900-1000. And will be used for stuff like BF4, Skyrim with all those fancy mods, CoD et cetra. Required parts below.

DEFINITELY WANTS BF4 ON ULTRA AND ABLE TO RUN SKYRIM WITH THE FANCY GRAPHIC MODS ETC.

- Motherboard
- CPU
- Cooler
- RAM
- GPU
- SSD (for OS)

Please post website to parts you are suggesting preferably if you can see the cart in a screenshot it will help - cheers!

Edit: Does not need to spend the entire budget, any option such as upgrading at a later option is welcomed too!

For that cash he'd easily get a

Phenom ii x4 965, 990fx extreme 3, 8gb 1600mhz, gtx 660/hd7870 and a decent cooler, 1 tb HDD.

i know this cos I only built one this year and it came in at under €650= approx £550 but mine also included a 650w psu and case.. so even less monies.
People will say the 965 is dated but I've never had an issue with any game so far.

Yeah that is more or less one of the specs I checked on overclockers, though can be gotten cheaper elsewhere was just seeing parts.

Wait if you can, Syn!

The game is buggy as ____ at the moment, with Dice still working on smoothing out gameplay. I would wait for the game to be solid so you can get some accurate benchmarks to base your decisions on.

Yep - I basically told him that he may as well spend an extra -little- bit so he said just spec some for that! ;)

tbh there's better people on here for the higher end stuff than me.. I'll never be able to afford even the above stuff.

Here is a rough selection on what I'd pick: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/1WIge

CPU: 4670K. If you want to spend a little more money go with the 4770K which has Hyperthreading. As of yet it makes as good as no difference in games but who knows in the future. Personally I'd take the 4670k and spend the money on a better graphics card because that WILL make a difference, but some people just need the i7.
Motherboard: Something more expensive will get you a second x8 PCIe slot, more USB connectors and a S/PDIF output and looks better (if the case has a window).
RAM: 8GB is the minimum I'd go with. You could do 16 however. Really any well known manufacturer will be fine. Don't go below 1600MHz. Higher clock speeds (more than 1600MHz) don't make a real difference in most games. Battlefield 4 however seems to benefit from higher clock speeds. I picked the 2133MHz because they were only 4 quid more than 1600MHz. Also make sure they fit with whatever cooler you use as some have high heat sinks. (Just for looks really. RAM doesn't need much cooling.)
SSD: 120GB is also the minimum I'd recommend. 250GB is nice though.
Cooler: Really depends on the case and if your friend is sensitive to noise. The best air cooler is the Noctua NH-D14. Good closed loop watercooling sets are the Corsair H100i, H110 or Swiftech H220. If he doesn't overclock to the last MHz or doesn't care about the noise there are cheaper solutions out there. But keep in mind that these coolers don't fit in every case! The NH-D14 is quite tall and the watercoolings loops need space for a radiator.
GPU: In December BF4 will get a patch which will enable Mantle support which probably will favour AMD cards. How much, no one knows. R9 280X or GTX 770 are good cards. If you want to go even higher R9 290X or GTX 780. I would however wait until the end of November to see how the non-reference design coolers on the 290X perform. The reference design coolers are supposed to be quite loud and because of the thermal management of these cards a better cooler directly impacts performance.

Make sure his PSU works with the new Haswell CPU's: http://techreport.com/review/24897/the- ... ility-list (or google the model)

Thanks mate, still quite a lot of that budget you can spend if needed also (upped it from 500-600 to 900-1000 so if you can get the i7 in with that etc let me know (not sure on the difference for the one you've recommended mate).
