erm...

primarily CPU and GFX card play a heavy role in keeping fps high...
RAM amount isn't that important if you got at least 512MB, speed isn't that important either, but yeah, the more and faster RAM you have will help plenty.

motherboard can play a role too, but not that significantly.

drivers for the GFX card too, some are better than others, but generally the difference is only noticeable using benchmark software.

but other than that, definitely CPU/GFX determine how fast CS:S will run

Make sure you have AA off too....having AA turned on with a lot of players or a complex map will kill your FPS.

three points here

1. turn off vsync in your opengl settings

2. use the search feature, ive seen this topic twice in the past month

3. post hardware/games issues in the proper sections, not in off topic

Ok.

Another factor is your HDD, 7,200 rpm atleast for todays games / fast loading times. To increase this formatting the drive ever so often / Defragging of the drive so the HDD doesnt have to look from the middle to the end of the drive for a map then its txt file.

SATA drive would be better over IDE but you can get 10k rpm IDE HDD's ie RAPTORS :D

Hope that helps with your quest for more knowledge.

So keep your HDD safe and your files will look after you !

The compexity of the map and the amount of objects that have to be drawn to the screen.

Your net conection speed too and as others have said your setup.

Easiest way to see if your hardware and setup are ok, is to run CS or HL in standalone mode(not net connected).

As i said, if the map is complex, your machine will have to deal with updates sent from the server so if you have a slower machine and net connection these updates cannot happen as quick as you would want it too. Hence the fps drops. If the map is not so complex the fps goes up.

This is a lot of a simplified explanation, consider the software as fine tuning and the hardware as doing the donkey work.
