Mr. T and Chuck Norris once encountered each other on a lonesome British path. Before the inevitable battle could begin, the earth shit itself and created Scotland.

You need to change the boot order, sounds like to me.

Go into bios, make sure that it's not trying to load windows from a CD or anything stupid. Make sure it's booting from the HDD with the OS on.

If you've done what cobs said looks like youve lost your MBR (master boot record) Due to hard drive faillier or a virus. But I would go with HDD problems so best to replace it when you can.

Quickfix soultion.
Just reinstall windows over the top don't format or you'll lose everything then make a backup of everything you need.

Or if you buy a new HDD just install windows on it. It will then be able to read your old HDD so you can copy your stuff over. (You may have problems with My Docs folder)

I see this call maybe 3-4 times a day, could be a few things (as listed above), most likely is that a program or file didn't allow a correct shutdown of your PC during a change to the partition information. Could have been a power out or unexpected reboot.

To me it sounds like a corrupted partition.

Depending on the OS - guessing it's XP or Win2k - here's what to do. Put the hdd in another pc with the same OS as is installed on the HDD, connected on the secondary IDE channel (instead of any cd or dvd device). Once booted, run a chkdsk/scandisk. It'll fix the errors and the drive may boot again, if it doesn't the OS may have become corrupted, in which case follow Kuma's advice and perform a repair of XP, by booting from the XP cd.

Hit me on msn (in my profile) if you like.

Every purcahse of a new computer or purcahse of XP has a disk.

Unless you got yours in an unlegit fashion, then there isnt much hope for you there. Unless you get a boot disc for that disc which will be an Uber Hassle me thinks.

umm, have you tried to do a chkdsk from another machine? If the installed operating system was XP, it'll need to be an XP machine.

80% of the time a chkdsk or scandisk will sort out the drive. You don't need an XP cd for this.

XP home edition is in the region of £60 from most places these days, so the excuse of it being too expensive is not there. £60 relates to 2 games, but this is a subject for another topic. Try what I've said chap, it might just work - after all, it's only my day job to fix these things.
