Every Windows 7/8/8.1 owner gets a year to update for free (until next July). After that it will be $109 AFAIK.

The 'reserve your copy' thing is just giving Windows your consent to download and install it automatically at the end of July.

It's an obvious upgrade on the desktop as it doesn't really take away anything but I'm not enamoured of it on the phone :(

a clear ploy to reunite the win 7/8 userbase as it was so divisive. i am happy with win 7 but i have to see what it is all about so i will update i think. can always go back to win 7 if i am not so happy.

Windows 8 is up there with Vista as one of the crappiest Windows OSs, but unfortunately it was the only OS most newly-made gaming PCs are made for. It won't be difficult for me to be convinced to upgrade to Windows 10.

I agree Vista upgraded to Win 7 because Vista was so bad.
Windows 8 is bad so they skip to Win 10 which is supposed to be a fix. Code is supposed to be smaller and less bloated (we shall see)

Originally Win 10 was to be a replacement for Win 8 only, however this was extended to Win 7 at a later date. I did read this may be extended to Vista, but you should do a search to verify this.

I do know they are giving Win 10 away to developers of micro controller and computer developers.

Is it worth it ?

I would imagine so as MS cannot afford to fail with this product. Far too many different platforms for it to fail on, with developers and consumers, particularly when there is so much competition that is already well established. Phones and Tablets are only small fry compared to the size of the whole market when you consider other devices.

I've reserved a copy of it but I think I will wait a few weeks for the reports to come in about it before I decide to upgrade to it or not. As I'm still with Win 7 and had no problems with it so I am sort of unsure about making the leap to Win 10 and leave what I know and love with Win 7 or go with Win 10 and see how that goes

some of you may have asked this question already.

if you upgrade from win 7 to win 10 do you get a new serial ? also if you do not get a new serial and it updates your current one to win 10 can you then install the previous OS back on your system using the original serial?

I don't know about Win 10 specifically in this case, but in the past where you have an upgrade, you can go back to the original with the serial number. My XP64 was on my machine, and I purchased Win 7 upgrade from Vista, which you had to upgrade the original, or in the case of Xp do a clean install, after backing up the files, settings and programs, then install programs, files and settings from xp after the clean install of Win 7.

Basically the upgrade needs the original files, as it is not a standalone package, so would imagine going back has not changed. It is just an install of the original O.S.

If you have spare capacity take an image of the drive first, then just restore that.

I installed it last night. Poland/my PC didn't get the reserved update yet but you can just grab the update from here and do it that way.

Liking it so far. Found a couple of small bugs that I'm sure will be fixed.

Negative or meh points:
don't like the new UAC sound
the photo app doesn't move through files with the left/right keys like it used to. fixed itself after a reboot
explorer needs a bit of tweaking to get to how I use it (YMMV)
stuff like this is I suppose the new norm:

..but off by default, and you can opt-out by appending _optout to your SSID.

Still, it was stupid on Windows Phone, and it's stupid now. Honestly kinda surprised there hasn't been a legal challenge yet.

Also:
