net limiting

Postby JCEE on Mon Jul 18, 2005 9:01 pm

OK, unfortunately my dad and my sister have their own pc's connected to the net ... but all they do is download about 10 things all at once, so my ping ends up going over 700+.

What i want to know is how can i limit their bandwidth to just about 50-60 Kb/s?

ppl have told me to use net limiter, but thats poo my ping just went up to 700 so it dont look like it's working.

any1 got any ideas??

sry about the double post

you could build your self a domain controller and have that cap their net access to 5 or 10 k a second when u play cs.

all their comps connect to a network hub which connects to the domain controller and that connects to a router along with your comp so u have uncaped net access :)

well the total upload/download speed it still set by your isp but with a domain controller you can act like a mini isp on your home network.

i am building myself one but it also needs to double up as a file server aswell :) ...ive just ran out of money atm so i cant finish it :(

erm.... could be your router is just crappy i.e. consumer level.

most consumer level routers are crap at managing connections and bandwidth, even if you limit a computers download your ping may still fluctuate greatly.

for example, I share connection between 3 computers on a 2048/256 line

If i use leechget and limit my download to 192KB/sec (upload usage is minimal) I still lag the crap out of the other 2 comps, not 999 ping, but it yoyos 50-120ms, I have to limit it to 128KB/sec or less to prevent noticeable lag.

It was hell sharing 512K 3 ways btw, even website access caused performance problems :/

there is no real solution unless you get an expensive router (or one that can handle bandwidth limits QoS etc..), gands solution might be one, or set a time when your family can download.

I just download overnight when everyone is asleep.

I recomend netgear routers as i can stream a movie accross my network @ 5~10 mbs and my ping on the server goes up by about 10 if that ...

im sure i researched this option back when i set mine up

Just before you go to play CS...go on their comps and disable the Network cards.

If they don't know what they're doing they won't be able to enable them again....say you'll look when you've finished playing!

May work a few times then you can think of a new plan.

A long time ago I had this problem. I have a 486 dx66 running linux with 4 network cards in - it's my hardware firewall and acts as a hub. Through some funky linux networking, you can limit what each card can do, or can limit by mac address (which is what I do now).

It works very well, my 3mb line stays utilised nicely, the wife browsing the internet/my second PC on the net/streaming films or music don't lag the games pc (which has open bandwidth, all others are restricted), and the next change to be made will be to move the whole thing to a slightly more powerful machine, add some more hdd space and convert this to be my cctv server too.

All the info on how to do it was found using google and my friend for all the minor linux problems i couldn't answer straight away.

And btw, netgear are a cisco company, so they are top notch.

yeah, shared 512/256 3 ways on CSS, ping wasn't a problem, but if either starts DLing a map or websurfs, prepare for ping spike.

since I've gotten 2048/256, websurfing appears fine, even map DLs are not noticeable, not sure if its a feature TC implemented, but singly each comp would max out the connection, but if one is gaming on UKCS, and a comp needs a map, bandwidth is limited and doesn't lag the other comps
