Athlon XP 3200+

Postby ^Brigatisti^ on Tue Aug 02, 2005 8:59 pm

Thats the processor I have currently but I was thinking is it worth it (>£100) to upgrade to AMD Athlon64 3400 Venice ?

I'd also have to buy a new motherboard so would I see a massive difference in performance or marginal?

AFAIK A64 3400+ CPUs only come as socket 754 Newcastle cores, which is what I've got. You probably mean a 3500+ skt 939.

As for it being faster I have had my Athlon 64 @2.5GHZ and my mobile XP2500 @ 2.5GHZ (which is way faster than AMDs 3200+ rating) and the A64 is a fair bit quicker in games. You will notice the deference, put it that way. Although it wont be extreme.

If you've only got 1 gig of RAM you'd be better spending the money on getting another gig.

some users tests were carried out

A64 3200+ S754 @ 2.2GHz (stock) Vs AXP Barton @ 2.5GHz (FSB ~220MHz)
both using R9800Pro, 3DMark scores were practically the same

I myself went from AXP3200+ to A64 3200+ S939, difference it made for games is very noticeable esp. source
