Game stuttering

Postby Gh0st.IRE on Fri Feb 14, 2014 6:18 pm

Hey guys,

The last few days I've noticed my games seem to start to stutter when I play. It's odd and happens across everything (from TF2 to BF4).

My PC can more then handle each game, and changing graphical settings does nothing. So far I've checked my HDDs and even moved my games to alternative drives and still the issue persists.

Any ideas?

You could see if updating / reinstalling your graphics drivers fixes it.
Something to try as well is disabling the anti-virus software you are running, but it really is just a stab in the dark.

The latest windows updates (all 22 of em) did this to my games, doing a full restart fixed it.

There is a culprit from Win 7 onward...that machine assessment feature, it will occasionally do a check and sometimes even when you are busy, I'll edit this post later with the actual name of the service.

EDIT: Here is the name of the service and a link to the Wiki to explain it...disable this mofo or it will cause you grief :P

FYI, winsat was depreciated in 8.1 ;)

....so go upgrade already!

On a serious note - It *shouldn't* be causing any problems, plus you have to run the assessment tool manually. It shouldn't be scheduled to ever run the background, let alone silently.
Was there any detail on why it was causing the problem?

EDIT: Ignore that part, it is task scheduled (weekly), turns out I was wrong.

I disabled WinSAT but unfortunately the issue persists. Google has been suggesting that my PSU is on it's way out and as such is under powering the GPU.

Gone old school and hoovered the shit out of my case. From the amount of dust I soon realized I hadn't cleaned it in about a year :o

Just booted in again now and already dropped 5 degrees overall on my HDDs. Will test further and report back!

PC got incredibly hot today. I rearranged some fans and improved the airflow. I'm thinking this stuttering issue could be a heat problem. More to follow...

Problem solved!

A combination of rearranging case fans for better airflow and generally cleaning up the PC (Defrag, Malware scans etc)
