'warping' lag in CSS

Postby weetabix on Thu Apr 09, 2009 11:09 am

As it says, I just got kicked from UKCS2 because people complained about it, but I see no reason why I should be lagging. I'm using 25000, 66, 66 rates, getting no choke or loss most of the time and running always over 100fps and about 60 latency. Have 4mb orange broadband, and a rather long wire running to my router (but the alternative is to use wireless which is surely worse).

Dunno what else I should be checking, or am I just doomed to not be able to play on UKCS?

p.s. other info that might help: using vista, not had complaints when playing insurgency, porphyrophobia is fear of the colour purple

Sorry i read it wrong. I cant think of what to do if you are already using no wireless. How long is the cable?

Are you running torrents?

Even if you limit it to 5KB/sec up and down this can still cause a warping effect not clearly seen or felt by the client, only people who spec you can see the warping.

LNV - I thought the rates were fixed, to stop people adjusting them outside UKCS`s defaults?
EDIT: sorry, grabbing the wrong end of that stick

Weetabix - Is your router used by any other cilents or your ISP work on network?, autoupdates or other net activity (P2P) can also cause problems. Cable lenght should not make a difference unless its +30 meters cat 5.

I'm not talking about rates, I'm talking about the torrent client.

even if you have 10Mbps up and down internet connection, some routers are terrible at handling p2p traffic so even limiting the bandwidth down to 5KB/sec up and down will still give the router CPU trouble and interfere with regular traffic, this will not be noticeable on simple stuff like browsing but will be picked up in tasks like gaming.

What could alleviate the warping while torrenting is vastly reducing the number of out bound connections (down to 5 perhaps)

alternatively just close the torrent client.
This is all on the assumption that he's running a torrent client, we won't know until he gets back to us :p

Use routers/switches with Linux OS installed (like D-Link routers).

I don't use torrents nowadays but it 'could' have been the wow patch download which is p2p, though I am pretty sure I hadn't been on wow for it to open itself up. I'll test again later to see if it was that. My cable is probably only 10m or so, guess that's fine. Windows updates are all set to manual but it might have decided to go back to automatic out of spite.

In other news, nice to see you're still about here often lucky :)

WoW patches download by torrents, and there is patch data on the background downloader (which starts after you exit WoW by default)

A torrent (a name more associated with illegal file sharing) is a the name given to a file that is available for download through a p2p network (bit lord, bit torrent, BBC i player and many of the blizzard downloads, etc, etc ...)

I've found the reason now, my cable is broken and I must have connected via the wireless to compensate when drunk and then forgotten about it. Now just need to buy a new cable \o/
