Steam broken

Postby Wash on Fri Jul 03, 2009 1:08 pm

I've googled the error message I get and there's about 10 solutions to this problem, only none of them work.

The problem is something on my computer, a firewall or something is blocking Steam from accessing the internet. Reinstalling doesn't work because that same thing is stopping the installer working, I get the "steam.dll missing" error message. So me being clever I copy and paste the installed files from another computer where it works fine, only then I get an "unable to connect to steam network" one.

It's not just Steam either, Sims 3 thinks I'm not online, and I can't update my anti-virus stuff. No programs seem to be able to access the internet. Things I've tried:

Bypassing the router by connecting directly to modem, still doesn't work so router can't be the problem.
Turning off firewall and windows defender all that stuff.
Install steam from disc. Same problem as when I download the installer.
Launch steam using "-tcp". I have no idea what this would do but the Steam site told me to do it. Did not work.
Delete the clientregistry.blob file. Almost everyone else who has posted this problem somewhere has fixed it by doing this.

Steam worked before I went off to Uni, it worked at Uni, I come home and it doesn't.

Please help guys!

Could you put up the os and anti virus and other stuff that could be useful so the problem can be narrowed down. Also when you say that no program can access the internet is that every program including internet browsers.

The first part wasn't ticked, the second ones were. Ticking the first made no difference.

I'm on 32 bit Vista Home Premium.

Obviously Internet Explorer works, but nothing else seems to. Spybot Search & Destroy can't update, I uninstalled Avast! because its listed as one of the programs that could interfere with Steam now I can't reinstall it. If it helps this is the setup log:

I've no idea what that means, there appears to be an error with my windsock.

The only security stuff I had was Windows Firewall and Defender, Avast! (which I now can't reinstall) and Spybot S&D (which won't update). So before I just couldn't get Steam or the Sims online, now my computer's "at risk". It's a bit of an issue, appreciate your help.

check windows defender and get that to do a full scan of your pc and use it to check for issues.

normally if the connection was not working at all (giving winsock error) i would say type into command prompt : netsh winsock reset and then reboot computer

but IE works so best getting a 2nd opinion before trying it :?
