I just installed steam on win7 then copied over the entire directory over the top from my vista pc :)

worked but probably not the best plan!

steam does allow you to make a back up but if like me you have lots of games installed it will mean a very big back up.

I install steam to my second hard drive and when i put on win7 i ran the steam installer and just pointed the install to the folder it was in.

If you have winxp

first locate your steam folder, right click it and select search
in the search field type
Code: Select all
downloads ; temp

you should see a downloads and temp folder for each Source game you have played online
delete them, they should just contain loads and loads of tiny files (they are sprays)

Don't delete anything else, just those 2 folders per each Source game.

Now, what I do is usually copy the entire Steam/Valve directory to a backup/spare/storage drive, install Windows, then either do as Gand does and just point the Steam installation to your backup/alternative location, or if its a slow drive then copy it to whereever you want.

You don't need to actually reinstall Steam either, just create your own steam.exe shortcut.
Win7 might moan at you and recommend that you run Steam as a service, I chose to ignore and it seems to work just fine as I have done for WinXP reinstalls.
