Team Fortress 2 - Piss Poor Framerates

Postby Seven. on Sun Apr 04, 2010 3:08 am

I just started TF2 up after a long long time of not playing. All the new stuff is rather overwhelming but that's besides the point.

I am having a piss poor framerate when action gets tight!
I've got a better PC nowadays then I had a year (and a half or so) ago when I was still playing like a madman. And back then I was having good framerates.

My set up now is:
AM3 Motherboard from Gigabyte
AMD Phenom II 925 @ 2,8Ghz a core (standard)
OCZ 1066Mhz Ram 4x1GB Stick
Asus 650 Watt PSU
ATi Radeon 4870 512Mb from Club3D (picked this one up mid 2008 when they were brand spanking new)

Back in 2008 when I got a fresh PC:
GigaByte MA790X-DS4 (AM2+)
AMD Athlon X2 6000+ 3,0Ghz a core (standard)
OCZ 2 GB DDR2-1066 (@800Mhz)
OCZ StealthXStream 600W
ATi Radeon 4870 512Mb from Club3D

Has the game been pimped so much that it has to drop below 20 FPS during explosions and such? Plus I'm running other games just fine, the likes of the new Battlefield game and such.
The in-game settings are much alike as they were before:

No HDR, Simple Reflections, 4xMSAA and 16xAF @ 1680x1050, High Quality textures and so on.
I also run in full screen windowed mode for fast tabbing out. I am aware that this taxes the performance quite a bit but yet again, this was no issue before.

I probably should try to re-install the game completely, off to do that now!

If anyone has any thoughts on this little problem of mine, please do share. Thanks in advance

I complained about the same issues , Seven... how is it a game that used to run so smooth on lesser equipment run so badly on upgraded equipment. Seems the answer is CPU, or raw CPU speed... as in a dual core running at 3.0 ghz runs Source games faster than a 2.8 ghz quad core... and more GPU power doesnt even help much.
It seems all the new fancy stuff in TF 2 (particles and effects) comes at a CPU cost, and when you hit your CPU limit you cant just lower graphics to boost FPS.

Anyways heres my tips .... of course use at your own risk

Read up on these tips and tricks I posted a while back : viewtopic.php?t=46109&f=52

If you find your game crashes a lot with multi core enabled -

I also use :

// Multi Core thread settings

mat_queue_mode "2"
cl_threaded_bone_setup "0"
cl_interp_threadmodeticks "0"
cl_threaded_client_leaf_system "1"
r_threaded_client_shadow_manager "1"
r_threaded_particles "1"
r_threaded_renderables "1"
r_queued_decals "0"
r_queued_post_processing "1"
mp_usehwmmodels "-1"
mp_usehwmvcds "-1"

host_thread_mode 1

In my autoexec.cfg , I used to have a issue with the game crashing when I used Enable Multicore and the above settings sorted the crashes out.

Whats the difference between "good" and "piss poor" some numbers would be more helpful. Playing on a large server, in a large fight will tax any system to be able to render it fast enough. Could try dropping windowed mode if you don't mind the alt tab, and or the AA and AF

Piss poor is 10 frames per second and good is 30 frames per second or more.

I installed Quantum's High Quality config and it seems to have done the trick. The game looks identical in every way but the framerates are much higher. I don't know what it turns on or off but it did increase performance greatly.

It baffles me how Valve manages to update the game to require more and more resources every patch. They probably had a hard time cramming all that extra crap in.
My pc has double the internal memory and a much more capable processor compared to the pc I had mid-2008 and still it's performance is laughable.

Team Fortress 2 Ideal System Requirements
For running the game smooth in 1280x1024 with High Quality graphics.

CPU: 3.4 GHz Processor
RAM: 1024 MB
Graphics Card: Radeon X800 or Geforce 6800
Windows 2000/XP/ME/98
Mouse
Keyboard
Internet Connection
CD or DVD rom drive

Got a second Ati 4870 this week, figured I'd try to see how it runs so I removed all configs and let the game -autoconfig itself.

Now it seems that the game uses about 50% of ONE GPU all the time. It's not utilizing the full potential of one card and it's not utilizing the second card at all. So Team Fortress 2 is Multi-GPU handicapped? :(

Re-read my post, sepcifically the part where I mentioned it needs a lot of CPU power, even increasing the GPU doesnt help as its CPU limited.
A single 4870 is more than enough to run TF 2 at max settings, its just that a lot of the new fancy effects and stuff use the CPU... Valve hacked in the effects instead of rewriting the engine to do the effects via the GPU.

You'd think a quad core at 2800mhz should be sufficient then. Time to attempt a bit of overclocking and see if that juices up things. Still bummed that TF2 doesn't use both GPU's in a SLI or CrossFire set-up, just for geekness sake.

Just wanted to reply that since the latest update (engineer) the game runs fine, smooth and fast without any tweaks or command line changes. Completely "vanilla" on high graphics settings.
Maybe the changed something with the engine update?
