Formatting PC & Steam

Postby Glitch on Thu Jul 29, 2010 7:00 pm

So I'm going to try and format my pc one of these days, maybe even tonight if I can backup enough of my stuff.

What's the easiest and fastest way to backup your steam profile and updates etc?

I got all (well most of) my games on dvd/cd so I can reinstall them, but there are major updates and maybe other things I don't know right now that aren't on those disks.

See your steam folder, copy that to another hard drive or partition that you are not formatting.

Then copy it back or you can run steam from where ever you copied it to.

Make your own steam.exe shortcut and you should be good to go. I've been doing that for years.

don't forget to delete these two folders
downloads

and

temp (located in materials folder)

do this for all Source based games.

there should be many many little files, those are sprays.

Any idea when I want to format all partitions? What files are necessary and which aren't for an easy ' reinstall ' ?

For Steam?

The entire Steam folder is self contained for Valve games, there isn't any re-installation required if you keep your Steam folder in a standalone partition/drive, non-valve games may keep files outside of the Steam folder, for Win7 they should be in Libraries -> documents or Libraries -> documents -> MyGames

If your thinking of wipeing your hard drive and reinstalling windows , then make sure you save things in my documents , maybe your fav's.

Apart from that reguarding STEAM ... if you play games via steam then steam auto saves your data to the steam servers ... so if you pc ever goes wrong you reinstall steam and has auto saved your data for you i know this cos iv done it 3 times all ready lol :D

I've made a backup of my Documents folder and left the secondary partitions how they were,
reinstalled my OS on the main partition and just everything windows-related was removed and I fixed some of my problems :)

Too bad the software on my pc is 'un-linked' with the settings I had before, but I'll fix that manually.

Wrong , thats only for steam cloud enabled games which are limited, the majority of steam games are not.

If you go to the Steam store page it will state Cloud support, otherwise majority of games on Steam do not have this support.
