Can't really advise on telescopes but as a little 'un I was a member of this society.

Could be useful if yours have an interest. It does have a general guide on choosing telescopes

National Geographic society does a great range of kids scientific equipment, not to ouch on the pocket either!

I'm very much into astronomy & lucky enough to have some very nice gear, the trouble with telescopes simply is the price, the cheap argos etc stuff is a complete waste of money, to start off you are far better getting some binoculars with a mount & a tripod, I'm not trying to sound off putting but I have seen so many people buy cheap scopes try it once end up not being impressed & it is simply because they have not got the right gear. Having said this this little bit of kit is highly rated

^ I've used one of those, they're surprisingly good for the price. Used to be into astronomy when I was younger but sadly I've always lived in places with heavy light pollution. Is a great thing for kids to get into though :D
This is my sandvich. There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My sandvich is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my sandvich is useless. Without my sandvich, I am useless. I must eat my sandvich true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy, who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will. Before lunch I swear this creed: my sandvich and myself are defenders of my country, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but sandvich. Aye.. I've read some more about this and maybe a really decent tripod and binoculars might be better... Even if they move away from stargazing i could still use them for other things.

Son any sugestions or should I go for something like this? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Celestron-71137-UpClose-10X50-Binoculars/dp/B0000CAOGV/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1352838610&sr=8-1

Celestron are good they are Meade's low range gear & have good optics.
