So which film have you seen last ?

Talk about films, television programs or a good read you'd like to share.

Red Dragon. Netflix. Odd that I haven't watched this before but although it's mostly the same story as Manhunter it has a few extra things to add as a retired police profiler is called in to help hunt a serial killer. They set it as a direct prequel to Silence of the Lambs as the closing scene is leading into the beginning of the earlier film. Pretty good but the killer is less menacing than the Michael Mann movie.

Beyond Beyond. Netflix. An interesting looking children's movie from europe that drags a lot and while pretty is way too slow. A rabbit seeks his mother who was taken away by the mysterious feather king.

A Knights Tale. Netflix. Somehow this works despite it being a very stupid idea and ends up being a very entertaining version of Chaucer's The Knights Tale. The squire of a knight who dies take over his horse and armour to compete in tournaments using a fake identity crafted by a writer they encounter with a tendency to end up losing the very shirt on his back while gambling badly. The actors make it worth watching and allow you to forget how silly it gets.

I decided to play Bad Deadpool, Good Deadpool armed with some Belgian wheat beer, pizza and choccy.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Reasonable film of the Canadian mutants origin but yes this is bad Deadpool as they waste the opportunity.

Deadpool. Good Deadpool. I'm glad this came with a digital copy because I'm likely to wear the disk out.

Butch Cassidy & Sundance Kid. Netflix. A great cast but this old Western hasn't aged well at all.

Let the Right One In. Netflix. A stylish Swedish vampire film about a bullied young boy who meets an eternally young girl who helps him take revenge on his tormentors.

Eye in the Sky. Amazon Prime. A very modern spy thriller as a UK intelligence operatives hunt a wanted Islamic terrorist that they intend to kill with a US drone strike. Alan Rickman in his last film role and Helen Mirren play it all in a very balanced way showing the difficulty of 21st century anti terror operations.

Fantastic Mr. Fox. Netflix. A firm favourite of mine as Wes Anderson directs this animated tale of a reformed fox robber going back to his old ways despite the promise to his wife. I don't know the Roald Dahl book but it seems to have the right feel to me of great but often macabre work.

I loved this film. I think it really well captured the book itself.

We went to see the Lego Batman film at the weekend. Very funny, had some adult humour in places (plenty to keep the kids and the adults entertained), and well worth a watch. Not quite as good as the Lego Movie, but close.

I love the Lego Movie so will have to give that a view.

Bond double bill.

Dr. No. The first outing for 007 and still very entertaining without a host of gadgets with my favourite James Bond in the form of Sir Sean joined by the stunning Ursula Andress as Honey Ryder the first Bond Girl.

From Russia With Love. Another classic bond and despite a bit of a silly line or two still a classic.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. Amazon Video. I was interested in this when it played at the cinema but never made the time to see it then and now regret that. Burton without Depp always has a chance to produce some grotesque wonderful films and this one. A slight under use of Samuel L. Jackson as the villain but a good cast of adult and child actors made for a very entertaining film.
A teenage boy having listened to years of his grandfathers amazing stories about his youth at a home for peculiar children born with astounding gifts has to deal with the old mans death and the thing he thinks he saw lurking near the old mans eyeless body. In a bid to put it to rest he travels with his father to where the home was supposed to be only to find it a ruin having been bombed during WW2. His father tries to convince him that the stories of monster and magic are just how his father dealt with his experiences in occupied Poland and later the war as he left to enlist just before the home was destroyed. No spoilers but from here the magic begins and he is introduced to an alternate world that hides along side our own.

Goldeneye. DVD. A solid Bond film with a very enjoyable tank/car chase and one of my favourite modern 007 films.

Inglourious Basterds. Amazon Prime. I'm a fan of Tarentino films but this was more miss than hit for me as although it had a lot of good scenes it didn't fit together well. The cellar meeting or the French farmhouse deserved to be part of a better film.

Logan. IMAX. Well no spoilers but DAMN! You should go and see this post Deadpool Wolverine film which apart from a few flaws is the depiction of the clawed Canuck we needed all along. They should have had Hurt sung by Johnny Cash as the opening title song though as it's so perfect on the trailers.

Jupiter Ascending. Amazon Prime. Bizarre but frequently pretty space opera that ultimately wastes it's cast and a few good ideas.

Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2. 3d IMAX. Different to the first film but still excellent with lots of action and laughs it has a slightly different tone to the first film. It takes it's time to flesh out the characters more and considering how many there are it does a good job. The visuals are mind numbing and the soundtrack superb so it's hard to pick many flaws. It sometimes tries to stuff too much in one film and some of the references will be lost on non fans but from a rapid start to some entertaining closing credits it still remains constantly entertaining.

Also Groot.

Last films seen were Split and Logan.

Split

Unexpected tie in with unbreakable, joint sequel coming out eventually. Took an interesting premise, portrayed it as theatrical as you can and then turn the weird up to 11 right at the end. I enjoyed a lot of the film, not sure how I feel about the end.

Logan

might be one of the worst films I've seen in the last decade. It was great to see a real wolverine story, it's a shame the actual plot and writing was college garbage. I don't regret things usually,
I wish I'd never bothered with this.

This is my sandvich. There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My sandvich is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my sandvich is useless. Without my sandvich, I am useless. I must eat my sandvich true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy, who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will. Before lunch I swear this creed: my sandvich and myself are defenders of my country, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but sandvich. Om nom.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. DVD. I've wanted to watch this again for a quite a few years but never had the chance until now so with the surrounds on to enjoy the battle scenes I settled down with a glass of Scotch to get to grips with it. It's the story of an English naval ship hunting a French privateer during the Napoleonic wars and is a visual treat as well as an auditory one with great attention to detail in it's depiction of life aboard ship. The action is brutal with the grim consequences shown in fairly gory detail but it also has quieter moments with the friendship of the Captain (Russell Crowe) and the ships Doctor (Paul Bettany) as two very different men who remain strong friends. It's a real shame that no sequel came along. Epic stuff.

The Cat Returns. DVD. An utterly charming studio Ghibli animated film that has a girl drawn into a magic world of talking cats after she saves the life of their prince. Quality family friendly stuff and the way the magical cats had black & white secret service cats was a rib tickler.

Devils Rejects also a great movie a bit gory as you said but still good.

I don't know about devils rejects but walter mitty was a godo watch.

Batman. DVD. Considering what they had to work with Tim Burton & Michael Keaton did a great job with the look and feel of this film but the story let it down a bit. Somewhere between this and the Nolan films lies a better vision of the bat but with DC that may never surface.

The 13th Warrior. DVD. A flawed but still very watchable film about an Arabic translator being taken along on a quest to defend a Viking village from a tribe of cannibals with some great performances especially Vladimir Kulich as the leader of the band.

The 5th Element. Bluray. Still a highly entertaining science fiction action romp with more than a few laughs as retired special forces soldier (now cabby) Bruce Willis is tasked to protect the humanoid alien Milla Jovovich in her fight against the ultimate evil. Campy but still so much fun and it's amazing to think I first saw it 25 years ago at Teighnmouth cinema.

Trilogy of Terror. Amazon Prime. Pretty terrible but still fun as a vehicle for superior B movie actress Karen Black in these little snippets of horror most memorable for the final sections last scene which still manages to be very creepy.

Moana. Play 99p rental. A very attractive film by Disney with a feel of Hercules about it, some nice tunes that fit well and a solid story. Lacking something but still very watchable and I liked it more than many of their recent animated films.

Hell or High Water. Amazon Prime. A very solid crime thriller as a soon to be retired Texas ranger hunts down two brothers who have taken to robbing banks of untraceable loose bills to pay off the mortgage on their family farm. Interesting stuff and well acted but no Hollywood style shoot outs and a fairly grim over tone.

John Wick. Amazon Prime. A retired hitman is brutalised by the son of a mobster who doesn't realise how dangerous the man he and his gang ambush and rob is. Old fashioned revenge thriller and very well done with lots of quality action scenes.

Casablanca. Amazon Prime. Oh come on? You know this classic right? Well it's funny but I don't actually remember every watching all of it before and although dated this story a man giving up his lost love so she can escape the Nazis is still great stuff. Maybe a little dated but still very watchable.

Hard Core Henry. Amazon Prime. Ridiculous over the top first person view film in the style of a video game that might class as a guilty pleasure but a pleasure for sure. Gory, silly fun.

The Horseman. Amazon Prime. An Australian revenge film in the vein of Hardcore about a father who hunts the truth about his daughters death and her involvement in a violent porn video. Brutal stuff showing the ugliness of true violence.

Captain Fantastic. Amazon Prime. A fantastic (I have no shame) looking film with a fitting musical score that is off the wall enough to be a Wes Anderson movie but isn't. A father (Viggo Mortensen) raises his children away from civilisation but is forced to return after his wife dies and the children have to deal with both their grief and first taste of the outside world. It's never less than interesting but the ending seems a little tacked on to me.

A Better Tomorrow. DVD. The 1986 gangster film directed by John Woo has aged a fair bit still has some great scenes with Chow Yun-fat stealing the show in a tale of embittered brothers and revenge.

I agree Silkie, John Wick is a great film. I've watched it a few times. I liked the fact that John starts with an "oh shit we're all going to die" reputation. For those that haven't seen it, you'll understand once you have done.

I've recently seen John Wick 2. It carries on directly from the first film including all the same action. I did enjoy it but I'm a tad unsure if it could be called a good film. It had some good moments, great even, but I still feel like.... well I don't really know what I feel like. I'm going to have to watch it again I think.

Dunkirk. Cinema.

I'll start by saying I don't care for the Dark Night Trilogy and I truly hated the last film nor am I fond of Tom Hardy. So with that in mind I haven't watched a film that was so beautiful and so inspiring in a long time as Nolans latest. Each little story thread comes together to make an amazing film about the Dunkirk evacuation from the soldiers, pilots, officers and civilians involved. How good is this film? I want to go and watch it again already.

I watched Nacho Libre with Jack Black yesterday. I have seen it hundreds of times but it still cracks me up. It is one of my favorite comedies of all time :)
