Almost finished with 'A feast for crows'
"The rover batteries have 18kwh of juice. The oxygenator alone uses 44.1kwh per sol. See my problem?
You know what? "Kilowatt-hours per sol" is a pain in the ass to say. I'm gonna invent a new scientific unit name.
One kilowatt-hour per sol is... it can be anything.. um...I suck at this ... oh FK it. I'll call it a "pirate-ninja".
All told, the Big Three need 69.9pn, most of that going to the Oxygenator and Atmospheric regulator."

I am actually reading Bioshock: Rapture and the story so far (not even half way through the book :P) is as good as the first game. :)

I started reading "A Feast for Crows" this week (about 150 pages in). I pre-ordered "A Dance with Dragons" a while ago; I was a little dismayed to find that it's not released until 2012 -- I must have mis-read on Amazon, because I was expecting it next month. =/

Ah, no, I ordered the paperback on purpose. =) All my others are the new edition box set (paperbacks), so I want the paperback so it fits in with them on my bookshelf. Besides, carting a big, heavy hardback to work & back while I read it will be a PITA. =)

Well, I think you'll be waiting until 2012 for the paperback then bud. :P

Only the hardback is out currently, for obvious reasons.

It's something my friends and I have also discussed!

Clearly there's not much confidence around in this, although we would all love to have our worries unfounded. :P

He's only about 63, so I suppose he's not at death's door just yet, but the times between books have certainly been increasing. 2 years, 2 years, 5 years, 6 years... Maybe we'll all be pleasantly surprised and he'll finish the next two more quickly.

Who was that other author who was writing a series and didn't finish it? Robert Jordan, I think; he did die relatively young. Actually, that brings me to a question: is the Wheel of Time series a good read? Maybe that could tide me over while I wait for GRRM. Mind you, I still actually have The Lord of the Rings to read some day...

We're going to have to rename this thread soon with all this Martin love! ;)

On a lighter (and better :) ) note, the new Lee Child book comes out today or tomorrow, I believe. \o/

The GRRM love in this thread <3 but... has anyone read the Sin War trilogy(Diablo universe) at all? I'm wondering if it's worth picking up

Empire of Black and Gold by Adrian Tchaikovsky

First book in a series with a particularly goofy sounding premise that turns out to work really well. It's mainly about a scary empire (with many parallels with the Nazis) that has long been ignored as not a threat by the Lowlanders. The main character, Stenwold, has been trying to mobilise the lowland peoples to ready themselves against the wasps to no avail. It's largely a big set up for what's later going to be a massive war, so the first book is all cat and mouse games between Stenwold's agents and those of the empire. Cool stuff.

It's also steampunk meets magic fantasy. Certain races are "apt" meaning they can understand, create and use technology. The non-Apt races tend to have traditionally used magic in the past and for them technology appears as incomprehensible and mystifying as magic would appear to us. In the history of the world it's set in, one race in particular ruled over the others via the use of magic. Keeping a particular deadly race as their guard and enslaving the rest. The invention of the crossbow by one of the apt races gave them the ability to fight back and led to a revolution that inverted the heirarchy. So there's quite a bit of enmity between the two groups. Also repeating crossbows are kickin' rad! :D

Oh and the goofiest sounding part: all the races are based on insects. As in the great scary empire is formed by the "Wasp-kinden" (and hence the title). The background is basically that humans evolved alongside absolutely huge insects. In order to protect themselves they took to worshipping them and emulating them. The various races have eventually taken on some characteristics of their totem insect. Mantis-kinden are deadly fighters (even using a weird gauntlet sword that folds against the arm), the ant-kinden are strongly martial with a telepathic link with the others in their city state allowing them to pull extremely co-ordinated attacks, the spider-kinden have an ability to manipulate and read minds (setting traps and webs so to speak). Somehow, it works. A lot of fantasy novels will feature different races and peoples and stick to tired old templates - elf, dwarf, human etc. These break the mould a bit, which is refreshing.

If fantasy is your thing, give it a go!
