Wish Id seen this in IMAX, the definition on the normal screen goes blurry when it pans those large landscapes. I did also make the mistake of watching it at 10:10pm. But I did love every moment of this. I thought Sylvester McCoys potrayal of Radagast was the most eccentric performance Ive seen him do.

Cant really justify the cost and inconvenience of a cinema trip to watch movies to be honest, so I plan to wait for the DVD pack to come out then watch all 3 in sequence.

I got to admit I am intrigued , after all Jackson managed to stuff Lotr into a movie trilogy and kept most of the tale intact... now he is stretching a single book into a trilogy, so what parts of the lost tales will he use.
I would rather see a Silmarilion trilogy to be honest, much more scope for epic tale telling in there... the Valar, the tale of the Trees, the fall of Feanor, Gondolin and casting Melkor out of the world... ah well cant have everything I suppose.
Sometimes keeping an eye on your stats is not a good thing :P

The thing that struck me with the Hobbit is that it seemed more geared towards a younger audience and more fairytale. I would have preferred a Silmarilion series as well but would require a lot of extra scripting with so much more room to muck it up. Jacksons interpretation of Middle Earth is how majority of people view
Tolkiens world now so I would be very nervous.

Took friend, she not realising it was a first part of a trilogy, got to the end and a wtf. lol

Good film but as has been said it is Jacksons view of the hobbit world, and with all these releases, Jacksons and others prior to him, all miss out parts of the book, that is part of the original story line. I really do think that it detracts from the value of the films.

As far as targetted at the younger generation, you really have to look at the mind set of the generation in which the original manuscript was released.
The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, better known by its abbreviated title The Hobbit, is a fantasy novel and children's book by English author J. R. R. Tolkien. It was published on 21 September 1937
Wickipedia

What did occur is that children's parents would read the book, and find it interesting themselves.:D

As far as stretching a small book into a film trilogy, I would imaging that to be fairly easy, compared to condensing something like LOTR into a trilogy.
