Peter Jackson Confirms 'The Hobbit' Will Be A Trilogy
Previously slated to be two films, Peter Jackson’s Hobbit has grown into a trilogy.

News that Peter Jackson’s adaptation of The Hobbit will now be three movies instead of two has many people scratching their heads. Or so I would imagine. Jackson spent three films adapting The Lord of the Rings - a trilogy written by J.R.R. Tolkien in which each book is longer than Tolkien’s earlier Hobbit.

Here are the word counts to give you a sense of what I’m talking about:

The Hobbit: 95,022
Fellowship of the Ring: 177,227
Two Towers: 143,436
Return of the King: 134,462

So, in spite of the fact that are over 450,000 words in the Lord of the Rings trilogy – over four times the number in The Hobbit - Jackson is nevertheless stretching this one book out over three movies.

Then again, Jackson does say material is being pulled from appendices to flesh out the story, and with three full films they’ll be able to include everything from the book.

“We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance,” Jackson wrote on the film’s Facebook page. “The richness of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related material in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, allows us to tell the full story of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the part he played in the sometimes dangerous, but at all times exciting, history of Middle-earth.

“So, without further ado and on behalf of New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Wingnut Films, and the entire cast and crew of “The Hobbit” films, I’d like to announce that two films will become three.

“It has been an unexpected journey indeed, and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, “a tale that grew in the telling.”"

This looks like a great movie. Movies based on books always convince me to read the book or read the book again (if I read the book once, already).

The trilogy seems like a cash in to me. The entire LOTR was three movies, and that was a book per movie. The Hobbit is a single book. Two movies yes, but three seems to me to be just a money grabber.

I agree with you ghost, why 3 movies?? but I haven't read The Hobbit so I don't know how content heavy The Hobbit really is.

tbh its pretty content heavy so can understand why 3 movies to fit it all in!

no matter how many times I put together the great jigsaw of life there is always the same integral piece missing that prevents the picture from being complete Annabel Rose Hardwick

If anyone asks, Gollum looks different because younger in The Hobbit.

I had a listen the night it went up, very similar to LOTR's (obviously), which was great. :D

Have my tickets for Thursday in IMAX at 48fps! Can't wait! First IMAX here in Dublin and I get to see the Hobbit on it! (I've seen IMAX 3D in Florida before, but never an entire movie)
