So I went a bit overboard but I guess I've watched a lot of war films. I chucked in an honourable mentions section for some other interesting modern war films. Should be one or two in there you might not have seen before :p

If anyone knows of a decent modern Russian war film, I'm all ears. The last few I've seen have been really disappointing piles of nationalistic crap - War, 9th Company, The Star, Admiral etc :(

WW2
  • Das Boot (German submariners)
  • The Big Red One
  • Saving Private Ryan
  • Band of Brothers (TV series)
  • Max Manus (Norwegian resistance fighters)
  • The Black Book (Dutch resistance fighters)
  • Rukaj√§rven tie (aka Ambush) - Finnish bicycle troops in the continuation war period
  • Life is Beautiful (Italian film - starts off as tale of smart and funny Jewish man wooing a woman in the face of mild prejudice and then the fascists get into power... - a really amazing film)
  • Schindler's List (Holocaust)
  • The Boy with the Striped Pyjamas (Holocaust)
  • The Pianist (Jewish man's struggle for survival in Nazi-occupied Warsaw)
  • Inglourious Basterds (lol)
  • Valkyrie (The German officers' plot to kill Hitler)
  • Downfall (Hitler's final days)
  • Katyn (Massacre of Polish officers by the Russians in WW2)
  • Idi i Smotri aka Come and See (Belarussian partisans - really, really brutal)
  • Defiance (Jewish partisans hiding from and fighting Nazis in Belarussian forests)
  • Enemy at the Gates (Siege of Stalingrad)
  • Patton
  • Tobruk (Czech Free Forces fighting for the allies in north Africa)
  • Days of Glory (Follows Algerian recruits gathered to fight for France)
  • Assembly (Mixture of Chinese civil war and Sino-Japanese war)
  • City of Life and Death (Sino-Japanese theatre - the rape of Nanjing - brutal)
  • Children of Huang Shi (Sino-Japanese theatre - A Brit stuck in China, trying to save a bunch of orphans; based on a true story)
  • Pearl Harbor
  • Tora! Tora! Tora!
  • The Thin Red Line (Pacific theatre)
  • The Pacific (TV Series)
  • Letters from Iwo Jima (Battle for Iwo Jima from Japanese POV)
  • Flags of our Fathers (Battle for Iwo Jima from American POV + some American war-time politics)
  • The Great Raid (US Rangers and Filipino guerrillas rescuing POWs from the Japanese)
  • Kokoda (Aussie forces in the Pacific theatre)
  • Empire of the Sun (Young boy living through Japanese internment camps)
  • Grave of the Fireflies (Anime about a couple of kids trying to survive the firebombing of Tokyo, pretty heart-wrenching stuff)

Special Forces
  • Jarhead
  • Black Hawk Down
  • Lone Survivor
  • Elite Squad (Brazilian special police force - BOPA)
  • Elite Squad 2 (Much better than the first one)
  • The Kingdom (sorta Special Forces - FBI agents investigating a terrorist attack in Saudi Arabia)
  • The Raid: Redemption (Indonesian police special forces try to raid an apartment block run entirely by a ganglord. Mainly a big excuse for a martial arts dust up but brutal and awesome to watch)
  • G.I. Jane?

Vietnam
  • Casualties of War
  • Hamburger Hill
  • Platoon
  • Born on the Fourth of July
  • Good Morning Vietnam
  • Apocalypse Now
  • Rescue Dawn
  • We Were Soldiers
  • Full Metal Jacket
  • The Killing Fields (loosely related - Cambodia)
  • The Deer Hunter

Honorable mentions
  • The Patriot (American Revolutionary War)
  • Gods and Generals (American Civil War)
  • Cold Mountain (American Civil War)
  • Glory (American Civil War)
  • Four Feathers (Sudanese uprising against the British in 1884)
  • 1911 - (Jackie Chan in a rare serious performance - Collapse of the Qing dynasty - it got panned but I enjoyed it)
  • Paths of Glory (WW1)
  • Gallipoli (WW1)
  • The Wind that Shakes the Barley (Irish war of independence)
  • Land and Freedom (Spanish Civil War)
  • Brotherhood (Korean Civil War)
  • The Battle of Algiers (Algerian civil war)
  • Kippur (Anti-war film about the Yom Kippur war in Israel. Heavily based on the director's experiences working on casevac helicopters)
  • Lebanon (Israeli film about conflict in Lebanon in the 80s. Shot entirely from an inside a tank POV - really claustrophobic and an excellent anti-war film)
  • Waltz with Bashir (Israeli animated film about the war in Lebanon and the Shatila massacre)
  • No Man's Land (Balkans conflicts)
  • Three Kings (Gulf War 1)
  • Courage Under Fire (Gulf War 1)
  • Johnny Mad Dog (Child soldiers in the Liberian civil war)
  • Heart of Fire (Young girl forced to be a child soldier in the Eritrean civil war)
  • Generation Kill (TV series - Gulf War 2)
  • Green Zone (Iraq war)
  • Battle for Haditha (Iraq war)
  • Hurt Locker (Iraq war)
  • Restrepo (Documentary film about an American outpost in Afghanistan)

Cross of Iron (WW2 Eastern Front)

Adding my vote for.

Das Boot

Also not a film but they should be.

Battlefields series of graphic novels especially the tankers.

How could I forget Das Boot - one of the best WW2 films ever.

Also, Bobbobthebob, you missed out a Tora!

Pretty much all I would have added have already been suggested, except for one.

There's a French/English film called Special Forces about the rescue of a journalist in Iraq, that one's pretty good too.
