Football League Season 09/10: Weekly Review

The Coca-Cola Football League Championship

Cardiff 4-0 Scunthorpe
Crystal Palace 1-1 Plymouth
Derby 2-1 Peterborough
Leicester 2-1 Swansea
Preston 2-2 Bristol City
QPR 1-1 Blackpool
Reading 0-0 Nottm Forest
Sheff Wed 2-2 Barnsley
Watford 1-1 Doncaster
West Brom 1-1 Newcastle

Coca-Cola Football League One

Brighton 0-1 Walsall
Bristol Rovers 1-2 Leyton Orient
Carlisle 1-3 Brentford
Charlton 3-2 Wycombe
Gillingham 5-0 Swindon
Leeds United 2-1 Exeter
MK Dons 0-0 Hartlepool
Norwich 1-7 Colchester
Oldham 0-0 Stockport
Southampton 1-1 Millwall
Southend 2-2 Huddersfield
Yeovil 2-0 Tranmere

Coca-Cola Football League Two

Aldershot 3-1 Darlington
Bury 0-3 Bournemouth
Cheltenham 2-1 Grimsby
Crewe 1-2 Dag & Red
Lincoln City 1-0 Barnet
Morecambe 2-2 Hereford
Northampton 0-0 Macclesfield
Notts County 5-0 Bradford
Port Vale 1-1 Rochdale
Rotherham 1-0 Accrington Stanley
Shrewsbury 3-1 Burton Albion
Torquay 2-0 Chesterfield

First day of the season is always really interesting. The Norwich defeat stands out, they seem to think they have the divine right to be promoted and have seriously underestimated League 1.

Sven's first game with a role at Notts County see's them win 5-0 against one of the best, if not the best team in League 2.

Newcastle play their first game in the Championship and looked fairly average, albeit against West Brom, and Newcastle will have easier games.

Middlesborough looked average against Sheff Utd on Friday night.

Good win for Leicster, against a new look Swansea team with a new Manager and no Jason Scotland, which is a huge loss for them.

I was at Bristol yesterday watching the mighty O's against Bristol Rovers and we got off to a very good start

Barnsley came back from 2-0 down to draw against Sheff Wed at Hillsborough. I didnt go but my bro in law did and he said we was shocking the first half although we had the best chances to go ahead we just didnt take them. But we showed plenty of fight and got back on level terms in the second half with a view to nick a win.
Our first home match is next Sat against Coventry who we always seem to lose against as we always seem to get them the first home game of the season. Hopefully this season will be different.

I watched the Newcastle-West Brom game on Saturday. I thought Newcastle started the worst as they didnt seem to realise how the game is played in the Championship. West Brom obviously being the YoYo club they are got to grips right away. In the second half though Newcastle played much better.

Cant wait for the Toon to come to Oakwell to see how league football is played. :D

Football league season can incorperate the league cup :P

Just got back from Colchester, beat them 2-1, was a tidy win, we never looked like losing, roll on round 2, then Villa away in round 3 please. :D

Well Done to the O's Shotz. I was watching for your score coming in. Barnsley also won against Lincoln City. Their keeper played well by the sounds of it. We only won 0-1. Fair play to Lincoln they gave us a good run.

I am very very pleased that Rotherham won Derby and Port Vale won the Dirty Blunts (Sheff United)

Yeah

Ive got pals that are west ham and i know a few millwall, and it is gonna be very interesting, as its a cup game millwall get double the away allocation (almost 6k) and they will sell it. except the police will almost certainly place restrictions on it

Gonna be pretty much the biggest metropoliton police job of the season.

The two schedualed Carling cup slots on Sky are monday and thursday night of that week.

On the sunday West ham are playing Spurs so it wont be monday, and on Friday millwall are playing brighton so it wont be thursday.

Orient are at home against stoke, who bring ALOT. Arsenal are at home against Celtic and that will be a huge turn out and palace are at home too over the tues/weds, so whatever happens its gonna be amazing

Barnsley are at Reading for their Carling Cup match. It's going to be a tough game although Reading have let most of their good players be sold and there is no Coppell as manager. We play them in the league on the 29th at home as well so there is going to be some good build up to the two matches.

Some of the ties are going to be corkers though. West Ham - Millwall, Donny - Spurs, Orient & Stoke, Sheff Wed & Port Vale (hope vale can knock the other sheffield team out as well!)

Barnsley lost 0-2 at home today. Absolutely shocking display. Really dissapointed tbh. Coventry weren't good we were just worse.

Hope Tuesday night against Preston will be a better display. I'm sadly not going but will be cheering from my armchair.

It was shocking

Agree totally with everything he was saying, Bristol City are discusting aswell pretending they thought there was a foul

If Arsene Wenger can replay a cup game cos of a goal scored unsportingly, and if Robbie Fowler can tell a ref that he hadn't been brought down, and overturn a penalty award, then you'd expect teams to be able to admit when they have conceded a goal, which is after all the whole point of the game.

Barnsley have Reading at home today. Hopefully we can win them at Oakwell like we did at the Madjeski in the cup on Tuesday and gain our first win of this years campaign. After 2 defeats at home where we were to be honest very dire things are looking good as we have aquired new players and they are gelling well.

I know how you feel dude. Barnsley have 1 point from 15 and are rooted at the bottom of the table. We lost 1-3 against Reading and we sacked our manager Simon Davey after the match. We are looking at other managers and hopefully we can get one in before the season kicks back off next week. Favourite to take over is Mark Robins from Rotherham United. We have been in talks with him since Wednesday night. I would prefer someone with more Premier/Championship experience like Alan Curbishley but hes not going to come to us because 1. we cant afford his wages. (probably) and 2. I cant see him relocating up north. (he generally manages southern teams) Steve Coppell would also be a good choice but again for the same reasons as Curbs I cant see him coming.

Mark Robins should be good though, seeing what he has done with Rotherham after the two seasons with the minus points deductions and he has got the team playing good on the floor football. He is also well respected in the football world and may be able to attract some quality players to the club.
Simon Davey wasnt a bad manager, got his tactics a little wrong at times but all managers go through that a some point. He has also brought in some quality signings that hopefully will stay Barnsley players under the new manager. I thank him for keeping us up in the Championship for the last 3 seasons but we werent really progressing as a team just a relegation dogfight every season.

Watford away next Saturday. Need a win. Desperately.

Can't believe Orient lost 3-0 to Southend. :(

Shocking result and it's not looking good.
