Has anyone here ever damaged a wheel and required a single replacement?

If so, where did you go? I want to save money if possible.

Back story is, lost control at less than 10mph, hit a kerb at a bad angle and shattered the wheel all 10 spokes broken. :(
On top of that, when it shattered it damaged the disc and caliper.

Not a happy bunny.

Re: Where to buy a single alloy wheel?

Postby Flukey on Sat Jan 02, 2010 12:28 am

Ebay is usually best bet but considering they off a new S3 i think it may be a little difficult to find a second hand single alloy

Alloywheels.com sell single alloys but i dont believe they do genuine alloys, i think they are all aftermarket

Only people id say can help ya is your local Audi dealer

Hope ya get it sorted and doesnt cripple you too much.

I had some bad luck yesterday also :( some chavs stolen my badges off my 3.2 gsi vec and scratched it up in the process so i gotta part with some money too :( think ill just debadge it to prevent it happening again

And im very surprised it shattered at less than 10mph :/ id be onto audi about that

In a way I'm glad it did. It seems to have taken a lot of the impact. Car would have been fine if I hadn't tried to move it and damaged the caliper.

you could try a scrapyard. hopefully someone has written off an S3 leaving one wheel in tact... pretty unlikely. would be a lot cheaper than getting one from Audi.

Yeh. It's a problem I'm only realising now.

I have decided to claim on my insurance.

On closer inspection the caliper is actually fine, it was the entire brake disc that had smashed. I might post pics tomorrow if I remember.

Shattered brake disc. Whole thing was hanging off to one side. This is it put back into position.

Image
The poor alloy wheel. Was broken into 4 pieces (2 main pieces shown).

Yeah, it's pretty impressive for the speed I was going. Have to buy the wheel from Audi though. Have had no luck anywhere getting a spare alloy. Tyre needs replacing too.

My insurance excess is a mind blowing £1000 too. So I may end up forking out for it. Roll on pay day.

Brilliant! Just got a call from the Audi garage.

They have to replace:

Brake disc
Caliper
Suspension link arm
Damper and Spring
Alloy Wheel
Tyre
Track rod end
Check suspension geometry

All of this including labour and VAT: £2480

Very expensive. Moral of the story, when buying turbo-nutter car always factor in the expense of bending it.

at 10mph that damage really shouldnt have happend :/

ive had much higher speed knocks and never come close to that damage

as for the price... ouch

they always charge stupid ammounts for top end alloys, be cheaper to get a nice aftermarket full 19" set. Thats one of reasons i went aftermarket, cos mine was about ready + genuine Vec-c GSi alloys look poor lol. My full set of 18" (on pic on other thread) was £800 tyres included. S3 alloys are pretty nice mind

but ye itd prob be better to go through insurance than to fork that ammount out

I agree with you Brick. I'm no dummy though and I have taken pictures of the all the 'damaged' pieces prior to it going in for repair. I will of course ask to see them afterwards and if there is any discrepancy, legal action will be swift.

In theory I could fix it but I am unsure if the geometry is out. I will not take chances on my/my passenger's safety.

The reason the damage was so great was that the only part that hit the kerb was the front wheel (sideways, so face on). Factor in a 1300kg car with 2 occupants and that's a lot of force for such a small area to take.

In future I'm leaving the car at home when it snows and calling a taxi.

I've been driving for 12 years and have driven in the snow plenty of times. I think it was simply the 4WD that threw me off.

Also, finally. The car is a leaser. So aftermarket wheels are a no go. I prefer not to modify my cars anyway.

Ask for old bits back, Tbh looking at that wheel all the bits would be damaged, the S3 has all lighter componants around there, they are of course really good till you whack something then they break very easily. Ouch at the price though.
