Car wont start :(

Postby bigbmxdave on Sat Jan 16, 2010 1:54 pm

Ive got a 1999 Fiat Punto, about 2 weeks ago I tried to start it and it would, I looked inside and the pipes were all frozen, I melted that water and replaced it with de-icer/coolant (better late than never). The car still wouldn't start but I assumed its because we had previously drained the battery trying to start it.

Today I tried jump starting it from another car, but still no luck :(
The car turns over but wont actually start.

Does anyone have any ideas about what I can try or take a look at? I want to make sure its not something simple before I have it taken to a garage.

i had a similair problem with my gsi vectra. It would turn over but not start. I tried jumping it but wouldnt start. I knew my battery wasnt so good and it seempt to be getting "tired" so i charged it over night. Next day i put it back on and still didnt work so i tried jumping it agian, still no joy... but after about 10 minutes of trying, it suddenly started and not had a problem since.. No idea what happend tbh

My car hadnt frozen tho btw, had antifreeze in it but part from that, sounds same problem

If the engine froze than you will be very lucky not to have cracked the head or block, it could be anything tbh, did it try to fire at all?

Is it turning over? Are you getting power to things like your internal lights and radio?

If its turning over but not starting then it could be something like an HT Lead or one one of the coils. If its not turning over and you have no power then its likely to be the battery.

As SP says. Check HT Leads, Spark plugs, Fuel Pump, Petrol Filter.

if the water froze in your engine you should check the freeze plugs on the block they might have been pushed out (wouldnt stop your car starting but you might leak coolant).

internal electrics work fine when I was trying to jump start it. Going to ring the RAC now, lets hope its a cheap problem.

Check whether your fuel filter has fuel in it (its usually transparent, so you can see it). After it's been frozen like that, sometimes it takes the fuelpump quite long to get fuel into the engine again. Means you'll have to jump-start it quite long (attached to another running car).

RAC man came. his diagnosis "Timing belt gone due to frozen engine"

apparently getting it fixed would cost £400-£600

Expensive lesson, unfortunately when an engine freezes it tends to break.

Ummm...has the timing belt came off? Is it sitting under the car?

Oh and what model of Punto is it? S? SX? ELX? Sporting? The reason I ask is that some of the Punto engines "might not" be damaged from a timing belt failure.

I wouldnt trust the RAC man though, I'd get a mechanic to have a look at it personally!

the belts still there, he pointed out how there were no teeth on it.
the cars a fiat punto SX

Im not too keen to have a mechanic look at it, charge me a massive amount for his time and then throw the bill to repairs into it.

No teeth at all?? Thats pretty strange! How many miles has it done since the last timing belt change?

If its an 8v Punto SX then there shouldnt be any damage done to the engine. Its just a case of fitting as new belt (and water pump, etc) and you should be good to go.

If the belt has gone, and its the 16v then there is likely to have been damage done.

Any idea if its an 8v or 16v?

I would honestly find someone who is a mechanic just to have a look over it for you, but dont mention anything to do with the timing belt!

fitting a new water pump cost my sister around £400 when she did it last year I think, that's already too much. The car is worth £200-£300 so Im not too keen to do much to it. I think im just going to have to buy another car.

£400 for a water pump??? Who was fitting it...the owner of Fiat himself??? She was seriously ripped off mate!

Find another garage. I seriously doubt it should cost you that much because I dont think its the timing belt thats the problem.

As long as the valves haven't been bent you might be lucky.

The Mk1 Punto 8v engine is non contact so no damage should have been done...

...if its an 8v

...and if it really is the timing belt thats the problem! :D

Changing the belt is a piece of piss and should only cost you the price of a new belt.

Not exactly a piece of piss though is it. Need to have everything in the correct place (top dead centre).
