I generally pick 4-4-2. Sometimes with an attacking midfielder running through backing up the strikers.
I do mess with the tactics. I look at what kind of players I have and what they are best at. The mentality I almost always use is attacking. Creative freedom is much if I have a lot of players with good flair/passing.
Obviously using the wide tactic is good if you have fast wingers and people who can pass well in midfield/defense. I used mixed on most others unless im trying to win/draw a game and need to push on or using long ball tactic.
I always select my target men and playmakers. And never underestimate choosing your corner and throw in takers. It works wonders if you do. Penalty takers is a must as well, dont want any numpty taking an important penalty.
I always tight mark and always counter attack. Actually going into each player and selecting individual tactics for them can work as well. Odejayi at Barnsley is no fantastic striker but he can hold a ball up and head it on for another striker to play on from. You can tell them to do this for you. I once selected one of my strikers to man mark their goalie to see what happened. I got 30 offsides in the match.
I also use opposition instructions as well. Like tight marking and hard tackling. Hard tackling works as well. Look for slightly unfit players in the opposition team and get your team to hard tackle them. You can injure them pretty easy and take them out of the game. (i do not condone this in real life though!)
But I'm feeling good, And if you don't exist, you're still one illusion that I can't resist
