Board game called go (wei-chi Baduk)

Postby Mr Tortoise on Thu Mar 24, 2005 6:27 pm

Dunno if anyone has heard of it. But I play it a lot (about 4 years) and its a cool tactical/strategy game that keeps getting better.

The game has appeared in films such as pi, beautiful mind and Hero (although possibly not - i didn;t have time to check the board positions). It is a logical game appealing to mathematical natures but is also well known for its intuitive aesthetic side - basically I think it rox ;)

If you enjoy chess or reversi or anygame like these then you will probably enjoy go ... also you will be ablel to beat current computer programs after about a years worth of playing.

If youve got some spare time and fancy a challenge check it out ;)

Its an ancient game, its past is cloudy but people rekon its between 4000-2000 years old. It is very popular in China, Japan and Korea and is played professionally for big prize money and apparently games are even shown on tv. There is also a cool anime and manga based around it called hikaru no go - which is fun. (http://senseis.xmp.net/?HikaruNoGoArchive - senseis is also a great resource for go)

Anyway I thought i would give a few websites with some info
http://kgs.kiseido.com/ : This site hosts the server i play on and has a link to a 9x9 computer program which is great for getting an idea about what the game is about - Also the server here is very friendly and is mainly english speaking.

http://playgo.to/interactive/index.html : This is by far the fastest way to be able to play a game and have an idea about what you are trying to do.

If you manage to get through these and want to play sometime look me up on kgs, I play as spingle and am 9k there atm, itd be cool to play one of yas.

'God does not play dice, He plays go' einstein (I think lol)

Mr Tortoise :D

Edit: woohoo made the links work

thanks tortoise. I actually have a Go Board and stones at home.

My flatmate is quite good at it.
But I get so wasted by him that I dont play that often. This might be a way to enjoy it without being humiliated.

(he does add himself huge handicaps, but still....)

Yeah I can totally symphasise with that. I have been on both sides of the fence here ;) and i did stop playing (twice) due to what you just described.

It is a shame that the handicap system leads to a mentallity of 'leveling up' but it is really ment to lead to an even game which is fun for both. I like the game purley because you really do not know what is going to happen. As soon as you think you do someone makes a mistake and then the game starts proper.

There is a term for people who play weaker players and destroy them 'sand-bagging' it is rude and doesnt help either player in any way.

Also if you get into a game you don't enjoy, resign. Think of it as leaving a conversation you would rather not be in - the next may be better.

Hope to see you on kgs sometime.

I also have this board game, tho to be honest I have not played it for over a decade.

This game was supposed to have been developed by a Japanese general, who likened it to being in command of a large army.
He was supposed to have trained his military subordinates in the art of war by alikening it to go.

Go is pretty cool and there are national/local clubs and leagues. It passed me by a little, although I can play and have a few times.

Thanks for the links, I'll give it another "go"!! (groan).

There is no comparison between the infinite universe of go and the random games that are Cluedo and Monopoly.

Risk is idd a very good introduction to strategy games for kids.

But I dont want to flame you Captain. I played them all. Loved them all.
