Yeah! It arrived on Saturday morning, I think the new social factors when your culture increases is interesting but at the beginning a bit confusing.

I remember playing Civ 2 way back in the day and the thing I'm really missing is the full motion advisers. I never listen to them because they're often bloody stupid but with everything else being animated, it just seems out of place to me. Another thing I miss is advisers/leaders changing how they look through the different periods of time.

In regards to what Flare said, you can always up the difficulty setting. If you really do think that the AI is too stupid on the lower difficulties or that the game is too easy, play the game on Immortal. Better yet, play it on Immortal whilst trying to get the "One to rule them all" achievement.

Use raging barbarians option if you think the barbarians are too stupid, they will still be, but then again they are not meant to be too strong, that is what other civs are for.

Also if you get a bug where you can not declare war due to a supposed peace treaty that should have ended, just launch a nuke, that will get things rolling again.

I notice that in my games, England tend to be very dominant for whatever reason :\

This game is immense, had one game that I gave up on when I got rushed by the Greeks...

Loving the 1UPT rule now, have to be much more tactical, even the way you protect your cities and the location where you build them, everything has to be planned out now.

Also, be careful on buying too many units as the maintenance starts to get out of control quite quickly, once you reach 0 gold coins the next turn one of your units disbands (luckily it was only a scout both times it's happened to me)

Another great idea is that if you get important resources such as iron or horses, there's a limited amount so if you get a iron mine with a (2) you can only build 2 swordsmen... it makes you have to plan what to use your resources for and you can't just spam out armies of swordsmen as in previous games.

Yeah greece seem very expansive and have a good military, very early on.

So far I've played 5 games won 4 and saved the 5th, loving every minute.
Shame you cannot save games online though meaning they have to be played in one long stint.

This only happens when your income becomes -5 or less, you can keep all your units with just 0 gold ;)

EDIT: You CAN save your online games but it gets saved as an Auto-Save.

If even!

Although I find it better since you don't rush through the tech-tree so quickly and thus each unit type lasts longer and is worth more.

Speaking of which, how on earth do I upgrade my units? Or do Warriors not become Spearmen in V like they could in IV?

make sure the unit in friendly territory and click on it, there will be an icon to upgrade

you need to meet certain criteria

1. the unit is able to upgrade i.e. you have researched the next tier unit
2. you have enough gold
3. you have the appropriate resource needed should the upgrade unit need it (iron, alu etc...)

fyi I don't think warriors become spearmen at all, warriors -> swordmen -> rifle infantry -> mechanised infantry
spearmen I think upgrade to pikemen

Well that's definitely a change from Civ 4. Warriors could become either Axemen or Spearmen.

Finished my first playthrough on Prince, it was a little easier than I expected, but the game is a lot of fun. Combat seems to be much easier this time around, I was never able to get conquest victories in 4 but had few problems in this.
My favourite moment: Washington trying to offer me every little thing he had for a peace treaty and to save his last city. He got bombed because begging is uncool :P

That's just inefficient. What you SHOULD have done is accept his offer, hang out around his border for 10 turns and then crush him. That way you would have had more resources and gold and would have given him false hope. Crushing enemies is fun.

Warriors can only become spearmen by finding the weapons in some ruins, and it isn't very often.
