[PC] Papers, Please!

Postby [FIN]JackBauer on Mon Apr 15, 2013 5:39 pm

Sup! Came across this rather original and quirky indiegame called Papers, Please and wondered if anyone else is psyched about it as myself? It's a game, still in beta, about a fictional country in the Eastern block around the 80s, kind of a fictional Cold War era. The background story is (as said on the website) about a war ending between neighbouring nations and the borders opening again. You play as a border controller for Arstotzka, checking passports and documents of people crossing the border, allowing people to pass or deny them access, trying to make a living to support your family to survive. And that's it. Might sound a bit boring, but I tell you, the setting, the atmosphere, the oldish graphics and the gameplay mechanics caught such a tight grip on me that I'll be following this game's progress closely. It's Greenlit on Steam as well!

Here's a trailer as well:

You can download the latest beta from the website for free, which currently includes the first 8 days.

This is my sandvich. There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My sandvich is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my sandvich is useless. Without my sandvich, I am useless. I must eat my sandvich true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy, who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will. Before lunch I swear this creed: my sandvich and myself are defenders of my country, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but sandvich. Om nom.

It really is a game everyone should play.

A deceptively difficult challenge, having to balance the interrogation of the data with getting as many people through the border as you can (you are paid per person and need to make rent, heating, medical bills for your extended family) can easily result in missing obvious information and subsequent fines. If you add to this some moral quandaries (e.g. turning away refugees with the incorrect pass or letting through a known murderer because you can't identify any discrepancies in their information) you end up with a fantastically tense experience.

The grimness of operating a Soviet era border passing in Eastern Europe has been captured much better than I ever imagined a simple 8 bit game could. That in itself is a great achievement.

I'm really interested in seeing how it develops. Something truly original.

It is a unusual game, cant say its a lot of fun but its a challenge... got to get people through but soooooo many papers on such a small desk, stop speaking to me you horrible person you have wrong paper, leave dammit, I got a wife and child too and letting you through cost me credits, I dont want to hear why you are happy to be here, go already :P

Starts off easy enough but it soon piles on the amount of information you need to check for each person in a hurry, while the occasional incident can suddenly stop your day, and leave you short for the bills... then you take shortcuts, take chances and citations come in, fines eating into your meagre credit supply... and now the son is sick and you cant afford food AND heating... and that damn woman doesnt have her PAPERS!!!!

Worth a try as it is free to try but dont expect to have a lot of actual fun, but dont be too surprised when you discover a few hours have passed by either... one more day.
Sometimes keeping an eye on your stats is not a good thing :P

Some things are painfully obvious, others must be made obvious... painfully

Gave it a try last night and really not sure about it. Don't get me wrong it does seem like one of those games you can just sink a few hours into and not really notice. But I'm not convinced enough it would be a game that I would play all the time
